Don't we know who we are?

Where does it all begin and where does it all end? Who are we?

"Don't we know who we are? We are the stars and the planets, the wind and the rain, the sands and the seas--we, the miracles of creation, are everything that has ever been. What's more, and what's more important, we are everything that ever shall be! We are atoms and empty space, molecules and living cells, a colony of sentient beings called together from the depths of time to re-experience the world! We are consciousness and understanding, awareness and appreciation, sensation and cognition. We are fragments upon which is written all the secrets of creation and existence--and in which is carried the seed of all that can ever be. Don't we know who we are?"

Andy Lakey's Angels

Tonight I was looking at my photos and saw ones I had taken of Andy Lakey, the angel artist, doing a painting in 1995-1996 in Sedona, AZ at the Angel Treasures store. I had been fascinated by his story of the angels and his art, prior to meeting him. Andy had nearly died from a drug overdose on New Year's Eve, 1986, collapsed in his shower, had a near death experience, with seven angels surrounding him, and he was "told" he would paint 2000 angels by the year 2000.  He had never painted before but soon his angel art became known internationally. His first angel is in the Vatican.  President Carter has # 3, and I have #1631 (and a later one of a small one).

So looking at the old photos led me to the Internet tonight and finding the sad news that he had passed away October 4, 2012, at the age of 52!  I was shocked! My sincere condolences to his wife, children, and all his family.

I very much had enjoyed my conversations with Andy on the two occasions I saw him in Sedona. I have his book, two of his angel paintings, and two of his energy sketches. I also had Andy do an energy sketch for my grandson, Daniel, who is now 21. I had also discussed with Andy my grief book manuscript, written following my husband’s death, which was awaiting publication at the time. (A Walk Through Grief: Crossing the Bridge Between Worlds.) He asked me to send it to him, which I did.

I do smile every time I see the photos of Andy painting a large energy canvas on the sidewalk in front of Angel Treasures in Sedona. When I had arrived at the store that day, he was painting and had his “angel space” taped off on the sidewalk. His back was to me while he was painting, and I unknowingly stepped into his “angel space,” and without turning around he said, “Someone just stepped into my energy.” I said, “Oh, I’m sorry.” He turned around and smiled at me. His next large painting was one he did for me. I donated that painting to Unity Church in Sedona when I moved from there ten years ago.

Andy was an incredibly talented artist who brought angel energy to many all around the world, and I’m sure continues to do so now from the other side. I’m glad I met him. I’m happy I have photographs of remembrance, and his beautiful art. He left us far too young, but he definitely left us with love.

"Coming Out for Christmas," Crystal Bowersox's new song!

I love this new song by Crystal Bowersox.  I had forgotten how great and unique a voice she has after liking her a lot on the season of American Idol.

Her song, co-written with Maia Sharp, has a great message.  This is what she had to say about the song:
“The holidays are here, and it pains me to think that anyone would be left alone or be forbidden to be with their family over something as silly as their sexual orientation. I hope it will serve as a holiday anthem for people who may finally have the courage to live their life as their true authentic self, proudly and unapologetically, and that their friends and family will love and accept them with loving open arms. May we all celebrate this holiday season together, celebrate equality, and give thanks for the true spirit of Christmas- with our one human family.”  From a post on SheWired.com

Some of the proceeds of the sale of the single will benefit The Trevor Project.  Crystal also tweeted last week that she was bi-sexual.

I bought the song via Amazon and I have played it numerous times.  I love it!   I hope you like it, also.   I'd love to see it top the charts for Crystal.

Inspiration is Universal ....

“Inspiration is universal.  It over-swept with grandeur all the past ages, and is just as fresh now as in time’s earliest morning.  Poets, as much as prophets, are illumined with a divine radiance.  They think, they write and sing from the very depths of their being.” –James Martin Peebles (1822–1922)

This quote from Dr. James Martin Peebles is in my book, A Small Drop of Ink: A Collection of Inspirational and Moving Quotes of the Ages.

More about the poet-philosophers written by Dr. James Martin Peebles can be found in my book, A Meeting of the Minds, 19th Century Poet-Philosophers Explore Spirituality.

The Cosmic Sea

“Whoever the aliens are, from wherever they come and wherever they’ve been, it appears that we all sail the same cosmic sea, carrying common needs, desires and destinies, struggling to chart a course that will carry us Home.  We are, in the final analysis, one people–so what benefits one should benefit all–and what endangers one, endangers all. If this is our heritage, then all we need now is to claim it.”
 – Don and Linda Pendleton, Whispers From the Soul

I received payment today from a publisher in Norway for their use of an article I wrote some time ago on a UFO sighting of a triangular craft that Don and I experienced in Southern California in the 1980s.  They have used my article three times now since 2006 in a English language 8th grade textbook, titled Crossroads 8A, twice in Norway and once in Sweden.  This time for a 10,000 new edition.

My article is in the Mystery Chapter and I feel honored to be in the same section as former President Jimmy Carter with his quote about the existence of UFOs and what he hoped to do as President to make the information public.  His quote:  “If I become President, I’ll make every piece of information this country has about UFO sightings available to the public and scientists.  I am convinced that UFOs exist because I have seen one.”   I’m sure he tried.

The textbook is a beautiful 221 page hardcover book with many interesting articles and color photo and illustrations.  Seems much more interesting than 8th grade books I have seen in the U.S.  I was originally contacted by the author, Halvor Heger, who is a middle school teacher.  He had read my sighting report on my website and asked permission to use it in his book.  They edited my original quote, “What the hell is that!” and changed it to “heck.”  (with my permission).

Anyway, I am pleased to be a small part of this textbook.  If interested, you can read my sighting at one of my websites HERE.

The Joy of Spirit Communication

In discussing his terrestrial life with me in my book, Three Principles of Angelic Wisdom, Dr. Peebles said:

“I, too, just as each of you, had many lessons to learn–and I too, had many lifetimes to learn those lessons.  And who knows, maybe one day I might jump back into the body and see what challenges await me.  For now, I am having too much fun and joy communicating with all the beautiful souls on earth who come across my teachings and guidance.  I delight in sharing with each of you.  It is a dance of love, a dance of joy.  Remember, I learn from all of you, as I hope you learn from me.  That is the core issue.  We teach one another.  So, Dr. Peebles is not perfect by any means.  It is a sojourn of love and enlightenment which we all embark upon, indeed.”

Spiritual Connection

"Most of us who are searching for spiritual connection spend too much time looking up at the sky and wondering why God lives so far away.  God lives within us, not above us.  Sharing our gifts and talents with the world is the most powerful source of connection with God."  ~Brené Brown, Ph.D. L.M.S.W., The Gifts of Imperfection

How to Live a Century, Dr. James Martin Peebles

Dr. James Martin Peebles, of whom I've written much about, was a leading Spiritualist, known world-wide during the second half of the nineteenth century and into the first years of the twentieth century.  He was a minister, physician, a prolific author, world traveler, U.S.Counsel to Turkey, served on American Indian commissions, peace commissions, women's rights, and an humanitarian involved in various causes.  He was born in Vermont in 1822 and died in Los Angeles in 1922, just 40 days short of his one hundredth birthday. He was an intuitive and medium during his lifetime.  Since the death of his physical body, Dr. Peebles has communicated with us on Earth via various trance-channelers, including former medium, Thomas Jacobson (who my husband, Don Pendleton and I, wrote about in our book, To Dance With Angels); and currently, Summer Bacon; and Athena Demetrios. In my follow up book to To Dance With Angels, Three Principles of Angelic Wisdom, I clairaudiently channeled Dr. Peebles for a look at the parallels of his spiritual life and his terrestrial life.

In 1881, he published his book, How to Live a Century and Grow Old Gracefully.   In 1912, he spoke of his dietary habits in San Diego at the 17th annual California Spiritualist Association Convention.  As principle speaker at the convention, attended by more than 500 delegates and visitors, he opened his lecture advocating total abstinence, avoiding meat, alcohol, tobacco, and all stimulants, to enable long life.

The headline in the local San Diego Union/Times, September 6, 1912,  read:

Avoid Meat, Rum and Tobacco and Live 90 Years, Says Peebles.

“I have lived ninety years because I have abstained from animal flesh eating, intoxicating liquors, tobacco and all stimulants,” declared Dr. J. M. Peebles, the principle speaker at last night’s meeting of the California Spiritualist’s association by way of introducing himself to his audience.

"For seventy-four years, Dr. Peebles has been a lecturer on various subjects dealing with reforms calculated to benefit humanity.  He pronounced spiritualism the direct antithesis of materialism and declared all true Christians to be real spiritualists, believing in immortality and the ministry of angels."

He lived another ten years and nearly accomplished his "Century," and Don and I often felt we had completed that for him as we wrote our book in forty days!--and brought him again to world notice with the publication of To Dance With Angels in August of 1990.  I recently published a new Intro to the book, available at Amazon.com in print and Kindle, and audiobook.

And from everything I have researched and read about Dr. Peebles, he also accomplished "growing old gracefully."

Meditation is the Opportune Time

In the most sublime sense, meditation is a dialogue with the body/mind wisdom and therein lies the most productive use of such time.

A simple technique for personal problems is to simply and firmly state the nature of the problem and request a solution while in a meditative state. We are all much wiser than many of us may think we are, and the body knows things that our minds often do not. To engage in an inner dialogue will often reveal the answers we seek.

We all have spirit guides who work closely with us. Meditation is the opportune time for you to communicate, through visual or auditory efforts. Within the slightly altered state of meditation, you hear messages with somewhat more clarity. Do you recall times when you were caught up in negativity and could have used some spiritual insight to move you more swiftly into the positive? Have you been given spiritual answers from time to time? Within the dream state, do you often feel you leave the body and have a communion, an opportunity for nurturing and uplifting of the soul?

Effective meditation can help us to become more balanced and centered in our full expression of life’s wondrous gifts, more resilient, more understanding and accepting of other points of view, more compassionate and sympathetic, more intuitive and creative, more responsive to the universal flow of life in which we are immersed.

Spirit Paintings, The Bangs Sisters

“As the sunflower turns its face toward to the
light of the sun, so Spiritualism turns the face
of humanity toward the light of Truth.”
~ National Spiritualist Association of Churches

This is an Excerpt from my ebook, How Thin the Veil: 150 Years of Spiritualism by Linda Pendleton, available at Amazon  Kindle.

Chapter 9:  Visual Renderings

While doing research on the terrestrial life of James Martin Peebles, I obtained a copy of his Last Will and Testament from California’s Los Angeles County where he died in 1922.  In his Will, among his personal effects were two Bangs paintings.  My curiosity  led me to do further research.  I discovered the Bangs paintings were precipitated spirit paintings done by sisters Elizabeth S. and May E. Bangs of Chicago, Illinois, American physical mediums.

My research led me to contact historic Camp Chesterfield, Indiana, home to the Indiana Association of Spiritualists, founded in 1886 as a Spiritualist Church.  The Camp’s Hett Art Gallery and Museum’s Middle Gallery houses an extensive collection of portraits precipitated by the nationally recognized mediums Elizabeth and May Bangs. The portraits were precipitated in the late 1800's and early 1900's.  Many of the paintings were done under test conditions in full day light. The sister’s gifts included independent or automatic writing in broad daylight on slates, and independent drawing and painting; all forms of fully developed clairvoyance, materializations, and direct voice mediumship. But their most amazing and spectacular phenomena was that of full color precipitated spirit portraits.  Although the authenticity of the paintings had often been questioned, and the sisters were accused of fraud, it appears the paintings are legitimate spirit paintings.  I was told several years ago that they were examined by art experts from a university and the medium on the canvas is not identifiable. It had been described as a “sticky” substance but it failed to leave a mark on the finger or even on glass that later covered a painting.

Ron Nagy, considered to be the United States leading authority on Spirit Art, and museum curator and historian at Spiritualist Community, Lily Dale in New York State, which holds several Bangs Sisters paintings, writes in his book, Precipitated Spirit Paintings, “The portraits have been examined by art experts who cannot explain the medium used, as the paintings are not pastels, charcoal, oils, watercolors, or any other known substance.  The medium has been compared to the dust on a butterfly’s wings.”

The full color Bangs paintings are rather extraordinary, and in many cases, beautiful and apparently even accurate representations of the deceased.  It has been written that often the canvas would “continue” to “paint” after leaving the presence of the Bangs sisters, and even changes would be made the next day, such as a necklace of pearls appearing around the neck of a woman in a portrait.  Some paintings were precipitated in as little as five minutes. The spirit paintings were of a quality that would have taken human artist days to complete.

The three Bangs paintings below are in an art collection at Astara, an organization and mystery school founded in 1951 by Drs. Robert and Earlyne Cheney.  For years located in Upland, California, Astara is now in Rancho Cucamonga, California, and is well known worldwide for esoteric teachings and mystic philosophy. Robert was a medium and author and Earlyne was a noted medium, psychic and author, and both were Spiritualist, and had spent time at Camp Chesterfield, Indiana prior to moving to Southern California.

        Astara Collection, Bangs Paintings

In April, 1888, the Bangs sisters were arrested during a séance in Chicago and charged with obtaining money under false pretense and not having a license for their establishment. The April 17, 1888 Washington Post newspaper article, byline Chicago, reported the Firm of the Bangs’ Sisters, conduct the leading spiritualistic establishment in Chicago, and in their capacity cater to a large element in the community.  Their elegant parlors have been crowded by day as well as by night and money flowed into their coffers in large streams.

While out on bail, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bangs’ seven year old daughter died.  The funeral was held and Mrs. Cora L. V. (Hatch) Richmond conducted the service and was of an entirely spiritualistic nature.  The newspaper reported that Cora Richmond had been a trance speaker and as such gave scientific, philosophical, and spiritual addresses while under the “controlling influence, as she claims, of some long departed scientist or philosopher.”  The report went on to say at the funeral service she went into her trance and “preached, or rather delivered a discourse, lasting nearly an hour, in the course of which she recited an impromptu poem.”

In July, 1909 May Bangs stood trial for violating a City Ordinance that was passed December 16, 1907 against the practice of mediumship, and for obtaining money for doing so.  Although no fraudulent practices were proven, she was fined, and according to author James Coates who studied the trial states false evidence against her was thoroughly exposed.

In Coates 1911 book, Photographing the Invisible, he quotes May Bangs’ own written description of spirit paintings:  “No two sittings are exactly alike.  Usually in the development of a portrait the outer edges of the canvas become shadowed, showing different delicately coloured lines, until the full outline of the head and shoulders is seen.  When the likeness is sufficiently distinct to be recognized, the hair, drapery, and other decorations appear.  In many cases, after the entire portrait is finished, the eyes gradually open, giving a lifelike appearance to the whole face.”

Spirit portraits were also done by Spiritualist Allen Campbell and Charles Shourds, known as the Campbell Brothers.  They produced a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, an excellent likeness, and according to Ron Nagy’s book, Eastman Kodak Company of Rochester, New York examined the Lincoln painting in 1941 by photography, x-ray, ultraviolet and infrared light, and used all the technology at their disposal and could not ascertain what the paint medium was.

It appears that the precipitated spirit paintings were, just that, spirit paintings, which came from the Other Side and manifested on a canvas in this dimension.  As much as the skeptics of that time period tried to come up with a plausible explanation they really did not accomplish that.

A Change of World View: Reincarnation

I have written before about the work of psychiatrist Dr. Brian Weiss. I admire him and the work he has done on past lives. His ground-breaking book, Many Lives, Many Masters has sold more than a million copies.  Which in some ways, should not be surprising if it is true that more than a billion people on our planet believe in reincarnation.

I just watched Oprah’s Soul Sunday from earlier this month when she interviewed Dr.Weiss.   Watch the video as Dr. Weiss explains how he went from a scientific skeptic to a believer in reincarnation while treating a patient for her phobias, with hypnosis.

He has written several books but my two favorites are Many Lives, Many Masters, and Only Love is Real: A Story of Soulmates Reunited.   Also find more of the interview at  Oprah.com

Limb Loss Awareness

Every day, 500 people loss a limb. On December 7, 2007, I was one of those people. Due to an infection in my foot and having peripheral artery disease, of which I was unaware, I had an amputation below my left knee after undergoing leg bypass surgery two weeks before in hopes of saving my leg. I knew going into the bypass surgery there was only a 20 percent chance of saving my leg, according to my wonderful surgeon. I spent 99 days in a skilled nursing hospital. Well worth it. (well worth it except for the food there) :-)

While I was there, I kidded with the therapists that I was going to write a murder mystery about who killed the chef. The bad guy had to be one of the patients, no doubt. :-)

Here is a photo of my leg. April is Limb Loss Awareness Month, and today, April 27, is Show Your Mettle Day. And the Boston Marathon Bombings have brought amputations suffered by 14 of the victims into the news. In my photo of my leg, my titanium post is covered by the sock but my “Mettle” is there as is the carbon foot.

Just this week, I received a new foot, an award-winning Echelon prosthetic foot with biomimetic design which simulates natural ankle motion. It gives hydraulic ankle control on ramps and stairs. It has an instant impact on postural symmetry, easing abnormal pressures at interface and other joints and promotes stability and confidence on rough and sloping surfaces and gives excellent energy response at all times. This is the first time I have had a movable ankle in any of my prosthetic legs.

I’ve had this foot since Wednesday of this week, and although it weighs a little more than my previous feet, I believe I’m really going to like it. Because I wear my prosthetic leg for 16 hours a day, my muscles and gait will need to adjust some, but already I have worked out twice without any discomfort, and I’m finding that it feels so much like a real ankle. One thing that many do not realize, that using a prosthetic for a below the knee amputation, takes a third more energy to walk. And of course full leg amputations use even more energy.

So for anyone having to go through an amputation, I suggest getting all the physical therapy you can, even way beyond what most insurance companies will cover. I had 14 months of physical therapy and gait training and it so happened my insurance covered it all. It is important to have a excellent relationship with your prosthetist and insist on a good fit! I’ve lost count of the test sockets and final sockets I’ve had over the past five years. But what I do know, bad fits can cause lots of problems, including skin problems.

Phantom pain at times can be difficult. I well remember the nights that the phantom pain would wake me from a sound sleep. Thankfully it never lasted more than 5 minutes or so. I still have it occasionally but not to any extreme. Cellular memory is fascinating--My foot and toes are still there. :-)

I see, in watching the Boston amputees, that they will get through this before long, and return to a normal life with little restriction. They have courage, and determination, and that is what it takes to heal. As Joseph Campbell wrote: “We must be willing to get rid of the life we planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.”

If anyone would like to help the Boston amputees you can donate individually via http://www.gofundme.com/BelieveinBoston/

Consciousness Beyond Life

Cardiologist Pim van Lommel, has studied near-death experiences (NDEs) for more than two decades in patients who survive cardiac arrest.  Curiosity about the reports of patients having NDEs while surviving cardiac arrest led Dr. van Lommel into his studies of  consciousness and NDEs.  In 2001, he and his fellow researchers published a study on Near Death Experiences in The Lancet, a medical journal.  In 2007, he wrote the Dutch bestseller Endless Consciousness which sold over 100.000 copies in the first year and has had 17 printings.

In 2010, he published Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of the Near-Death Experience, available in hardcover, tradepaper, and Kindle.

Nine million Americans have experienced NDEs, and the findings of Dr. van Lommel’s studies correlate with those of Dr. Raymond Moody, a pioneer in Near Death Experiences with his 1975 book, Life After Life, and studies of others.   .

The hypothesis held by science has been that consciousness is a function of the brain but there is no proof of that

Dr. van Lommel’s studies have shown that those having near death experiences most often find the experience impressive, their view of life changes, they no longer fear death, and are left with an  enhanced spirituality, independent of prior religious beliefs.

His findings have also touched him and changed his world view. He believes consciousness is non-local and science has a problem with accepting that.  A new paradigm is needed and although millions experience NDEs, he believes it is considered a taboo subject by many.  He suggests people need to talk about their experience, share findings, and hope for a shift in the paradigm.  For consciousness beyond life to be accepted by science, Dr. van Lommel states that science has to change to accept the aspects of mankind and in doing so, has to include subjective criteria.  Subjective experiences cannot be proven, people tell about it, but science wants to prove it.   Until now, he says, science is—what  you can measure is real, what you cannot measure is not there.  We cannot measure consciousness, we cannot prove the content of consciousness.

Dr. van Lommel is devoting his time now to lecturing, speaking at universities, hospitals, medical schools, writing articles, appearing on TV and radio.  He says in Holland the paradigm is changing and he receives more invitations now to speak to scientific groups.

Not only do I personally believe in NDEs, and have written about them previously, I also believe that consciousness lives on after the shedding of the physical body.  The bond of love is part of consciousness, and it is there after death, as it is in life.

Additonal information can be found at the International Association of Near Death Studies (IANDS) website.

Ingo Swann, Pioneer of Remote Viewing, Dies.

Ingo Swann, pioneer of Remote Viewing, died February 1, 2013, at the age of  79. Largely known as the Father of Remote Viewing, Ingo Swann was also an artist and an author of several books and many articles on remote viewing, psychic abilities, and the paranormal.

The military remote viewers were trained under Ingo Swann, and a team of scientist, including Drs. Hal Puthoff, Russell Targ, Charles Tart, and others at Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in Menlo Park, CA., in conjunction with the CIA. Several had psychic ability before undergoing any training. A number of the retired military remote viewers have become consultants in parapsychology and still do remote viewing for agencies, corporations, individuals, and train others.

Read more about his life andwork here and read my previous blog entry, “Psychic Spies:  Remote Viewing,”  for a look at remote viewing and some of those who have worked with the military Stargate Program.
