Elizabeth Taylor. A Star!

1932-2011

"I will not be silenced and I will not give up and I will not be ignored." With these words, Elizabeth Taylor lent her voice to the voiceless, her iconic image to those who had previously been invisible, and her compassion and determination to a cause many others had shunned: the fight against HIV/AIDS. Her willingness to speak out against apathy and silence in the early, frightening days of the epidemic and her instinctive sympathy for those in need earned her a place as one of the most influential advocates for people living with HIV in the U.S. and around the world.

A legendary star of stage and screen, Elizabeth Taylor has achieved equal fame for her humanitarian commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS, which dates from 1984. As she remembers it, “I kept seeing all these news reports on this new disease and kept asking myself why no one was doing anything. And then I realized that I was just like them. I wasn’t doing anything to help.” The opportunity to do so came only too soon, when her long-time friend Rock Hudson died of AIDS. Appalled by both the suffering he experienced and the cruel and gratuitous condemnation that befell so many of those affected by the disease, Ms. Taylor determined to speak out against hypocrisy and discrimination and for compassion and care. Ever since, she has lent her voice—and indeed her heart and soul—to the fight against HIV and AIDS.

In 1985, Ms. Taylor joined with Dr. Mathilde Krim and a small group of physicians and scientists to form the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR). As amfAR’s Founding National Chairman, she became the new organization’s principal spokesperson and titular head. As a great star and beloved public figure, she attracted enormous media attention. As a woman and a mother, her voice touched millions of hearts and minds. Indeed, for many Americans, it was Elizabeth Taylor who brought the issue of HIV/AIDS into the mainstream.

"Earth, A Loving and Living Experience of Divine Thought"

This is an excerpt from our Book, To Dance With Angels, in which my husband, Don Pendleton asks the spirit, Dr. James Martin Peebles, channeled by trance-medium Thomas Jacobson, this question. (To Dance With Angels will be available soon in ebook format, Kindle and Smashword).

DON: It has been suggested by some modern thinkers—especially people in the earth sciences —that the Earth and its biosphere is, in their view, like a single entity, sort of a living system in which each constituent of that system is intimately responsive and, uh, interactive with the whole. Sounds good to me. Could you comment on that and perhaps relate it to the entire universe as a larger entity of somewhat the same nature?

DR. PEEBLES: Yes; it is what we call synchronicity and the oneness of the universe. In the Earth or in the universe or in the microbe or in the nucleus there is movement, there is motion. In that motion there is only change. And within that change there is always the return to the source; there is always the recycling, similar, extremely close in precise measurements, extremely close to a perfect circle but not quite; and so thereby becoming a spiral—figuratively, symbolically, and literally by measurement.

This is not only a three-dimensional but four-dimensional phenomenon and even beyond that. The spiral is the source of the greater frequency changes, such as black holes, which goes into the discussion of other dimensions, another reality, another universe; also internal combustion, ah . . . instantaneous or spontaneous combustion of an emotional experience, or a physical experience . . .uh, interdimensional travel, in the form of the spiral.

To resist change is to ignite pain and separation; to surrender and move with, and eventually to pilot change is to become the center of the universe rather than the periphery; the creator rather than the victim.

The entire universe is a loving and living experience of divine thought. It is a fabric that is intermeshed with all things. All particles are a part of this—and the science of the next century will not be priding itself on its great diversity, its great specialization, but instead will pride itself on a unified understanding. All the differences that have been found, or so-called discovered in your current century will . . . their source will be found to be common, into oneness, or a unified field, in the century to come.

So it is true that every movement in one part of the universe affects another part of that universe to some infinitesimal degree at least. And you are part of all life around you.

The Spirituality of a Young Gifted Artist, Akiane

You may have seen Akiane and her incredible art work before when she has appeared on various TV shows. Her talent, which began at a very young age, is quite amazing and inspirational. She considers her talent to be directed by God. Obviously her inspiration not only in her art but in her writings has a strong spiritual essence and message. Her paintings evoke an energy that is pure and loving.

And by the way, I added the word Mystic to her description in the quote above, because from what I have read and heard about Akiane, I would consider her a mystic as she is a visionary and has a connection to the spiritual world.

a Response to Bloggers’ questions regarding alternative lifestyles.

I define spirituality as a search for love, beauty, happiness and wisdom. Spirituality is a journey that we never finish. It has nothing to do with our levels of development, achievement, awareness or intention.

Both a two year-old and a centenarian might not be wise, happy or altruistic yet highly spiritual. Young children might not be fully aware how spiritual they are, however, without childlike sincerity and purity we cannot even imagine certain touch of holiness.

Hitler, too, tried to create his own version of perfect, healthy and stable society. For many he was an epitome of farsightedness and spirituality. The Pope even blessed Hitler’s army. Was Hitler spiritual? Yes. In his own diabolic and hideous way.

How do we weigh levels of spirituality? Are alternative lifestyles less spiritual than traditional ones? Some people abstain from all intimate relationships, because they believe they have to devote their time to love all mankind in a childlike genuineness. Others form monogamous heterosexual relationships. While others create bonds outside all traditional rules.

From the standpoint of eternity each level of maturity is relative. We are all spiritual, and we are all different. Neither higher, nor lower. Neither farther, nor closer. Neither deeper, nor more shallow. Just uniquely different. Looking at a blossom from a different direction one will see it completely foreign, special, beautiful or revolting depending on where we stand. If the close-up is of a spider attached to the stem, then for those who don’t like spiders the sight will look distasteful. If the image is of a butterfly on a petal the view may appear peaceful to us, but not for a bird hungrily watching the scene.

From the standpoint of our present world we all assign our measurements of preference. Given the choice we will join families and groups based on our interests. We attract those with similar values and ideals. People crave belonging. So whether it is a national, racial, religious, political, educational, vocational or biological identification we try to connect to something familiar and within our comfort zone.

Clear messages of diverse feelings experienced by other people were part of my visionary and extrasensory perception since I was five years of age. I do not condemn any personal choices for intimate relationships. Love is love. I detest only the violence and trauma that any self-centered conduct can cause to others.

Linda Pendleton has written fiction and nonfiction. Together, Don and Linda wrote the nonfiction books, To Dance With Angels; Whispers From the Soul, the Divine Dance of Consciousness; and the novel, Roulette: The Search for the Sunrise Killer. Linda's novels include Corn Silk Days, Iowa, 1862; Shattered Lens: Catherine Winter, Private Investigator; and The Dawning, a Novel of Mystery and Suspense.

Our Unseen Guest, The Finley's Communication with Stephen, 1920

The Finley’s, known as “Darby and Joan,” in 1916 began communication with a young American soldier who had died in France on Christmas morning, 1915. Through the mediumship of Joan, the couple had fascinating and ongoing communication with this soldier who they called, Stephen, as he taught them about the other side and life after death. The book published in 1920 became a classic in spirit communication literature.

Linda Pendleton, no stranger to spirit communication, has written a new Introduction to Our Unseen Guest. "Between the Bookends:" Christina-Taylor Green (September 11, 2001—January 8, 2011)

Roxanna Green said about her 9 year-old daughter who was gunned down in Tucson Arizona yesterday morning at the Gabrielle Giffords political event, “I just want her memory to live on because was a face of hope, a face of change, faces of us coming together as a country to stop the violence and hatred and the evil words, and for us to bring awareness that there are people out there that have these problems. We have to protect our government officials and innocent young children, people who go there to get involved and make our country a better place.”

According to an article by Stephanie Innes in the Arizona Daily Star today, Christina-Taylor had “already told her parents she wanted to attend Penn State one day and have a career that involved helping those less fortunate than her. She also loved animals and was a passionate dancer who loved ballet, hip-hop, jazz and gymnastics and was the only girl on her Canyon del Oro Little League baseball team, ‘The Pirates.’ She played second base.”

She also loved swimming with 11 year-old brother, Dallas, apparently named after his grandfather.

“Christina-Taylor came from a family of baseball players. Her grandfather, former major-league pitcher Dallas Green, was team manager for the Philadelphia Phillies when they won the World Series in 1980.

"She kept up with everyone, she was a strong girl, a very good athlete and a strong swimmer," said her mother, Roxanna Green. "She was interested in everything. She got a guitar for Christmas so her next thing was learning to play guitar."

“Christina-Taylor also enjoyed singing in a church choir at St. Odilia's Catholic Church, where she had received her first Holy Communion in the spring.”

Her mother said she was very interested in going to the Saturday morning event with a neighbor, a family friend, Susan Hileman, (also a victim of a gunshot wound), because she wanted to learn more about government so she could help out in the future. Christina, a 3rd grader was recently was elected to the school council.

"She was born back east and Sept. 11 affected everyone there, and Christina-Taylor was always very aware of it. She was very patriotic and wearing red, white and blue was really special to her," her mother said. "She was all about helping people, and being involved. It's so tragic. She went to learn today and then someone with so much hatred in their heart took the lives of innocent people."

“Because she was born on Sept. 11 in that year where American history took a sudden and dramatic turn, Christina was among the 9/11 babies featured in a book titled Faces of Hope."

Both President Obama and FBI Director Robert Mueller referenced Christina in remarks about the tragedy.

Her father, John Green stated, “I'm proud of her. That is where she started, President Obama and his campaign is where she started getting interested in politics and at least to have him mention her makes me feel good. She was born on 9/11, so when you look at the bookends of her life, they were pretty tragic, but everything in the middle was the best.”

In the book, The Faces of Hope, apparently the photograph of baby Christiana-Taylor says, "I hope you see rainbows.”

Not only will she see rainbows, she was a beautiful rainbow.

Another Side of "Honey West" Actress, Anne Francis

“The Seed of each of us takes different form as we, millions of fragments of the One, respond to Its warmth. Though our experiences be different, I salute you in that Oneness that embraces us all.” ~Anne Francis, from the Introduction to her book, Voices From Home, An Inner Journey.

Anne Francis, known for her acting roles in classic movies such as Bad Day at Black Rock, Forbidden Planet, Blackboard Jungle, and star of the TV program Honey West died Sunday at the age of 80. She won the Golden Globe in 1965 as the Most Popular Female Personality for her role as Honey West, the first female PI in a TV series. The TV series was based a series of detective novels written by G. G. Fickling, pseudonym for Forrest and Gloria Fickling, a husband and wife writing team of the 1950s-60s.

I’ve not read the novels but I thought of the type of sexy detective novels such as those written by my friend Richard S. Prather and his Shell Scott PI series of best selling books of the ’50-60s. And apparently the Ficklings were friends of Prather.

The Honey West character was sexy, and Anne had a sultry look and a distinctive beauty mark she was known for, but she also took on the bad guys with her expertise with a gun and karate. She also had a pet ocelot. The TV series was on for 30 episodes, 1965-66, with Aaron Spelling as Executive Producer.

In 1983, I had the opportunity of seeing Anne Francis at the Santa Barbara’s Writer Conference. It was there that I discovered she had also written a book, a book a lot of people do not know of. I had found her book very interesting, and when I heard of her death Sunday, I pulled the book from my bookshelf. It is called Voices From Home, An Inner Journey and was published in 1982 by Celestial Arts.

Anne Francis writes that her book is not a book about hidden skeletons, and name revealing dalliances but is far more intimate and she calls the book her spiritual expose. On the cover flap she wrote: “It is about our essence of being, the inexplicable reality of mysticism, psychic phenomena, and the inner workings of mind and spirit which contribute to the growth of the invisible and the most important part of us; hidden from the glare of lights and the camera’s eye.”

It really is a fascinating book of unexpected subjects: spirituality, love, contact with the other side, life and death, the mind and energy, creating our lives, and spiritual growth and enlightenment.

I very much enjoyed reading her book, and obviously I still remember the book as it immediately came to mind when I heard of her death.

I do hope her daughters, Jane and Margaret, will consider putting their mother’s book back in print and ebook format so it can be shared again.

Giving

What I like as 2010 is coming to a close and on the edge of a promise of a new year hopefully filled with happiness, contentment, and health, is taking the time, always about this time of the month or between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, to give. I don’t mean the Christmas gifts for family and friends, but the gifts given to those we may not even know at all.

Today I packed a small box that will go out tomorrow to a Women’s shelter in a nearby city. I made two dozen inspirational bookmarks as that was one thing listed on their Wish List. I enclosed a dozen small notecards, several pair of new crocheted slippers and new pairs of panty hose.

I also gave donations to my favorite charities. I love donating a flock of chickens, a baby goat, or even a share of a pig. Check into Heifer International Organization.

And Feeding America. It was previously called America’s Second Harvest. I like this one a lot, too. The food stays in your local area if you would like.

Others you may want to consider are Clinton Foundation (AIDS and Malaria), Elton John AIDS Foundation, Habitat for Humanity.

These are my favorites.

And who knows, I may end up giving more chicks, ducks, or rabbits, before the year is out. Try it. It may make your heart feel warm like it does mine.

A number of years ago, while writing our book, To Dance With Angels, Don and I had a discussion with spirit guide Dr. James Martin Peebles, about the intelligence of animals. Dr. Peebles was being channeled by trance medium, Thomas Jacobson. Here is an excerpt from our book as Don asks Dr. Peebles our question for this particular interview that day.

DON: We have heard you speak to others regarding other intelligent species on Earth—that maybe humans take a little too much pride in that we tend to think of ourselves as the only self-conscious life on the planet. Can we talk about that?

DR. PEEBLES: Yes, well . . . the dolphins . . . whales . . .each individual whale and dolphin is a slightly different case, but overall the dolphin is—in the human concept of intelligence, which is limited—the dolphin is close, not quite equal to but close to the human being. However, there are some individual dolphins that are far superior to many or most human beings. More important, perhaps—the teaching of loving allowance is the greatest teaching for the planet Earth—and I'm not speaking of that in terms of addressing or listening to us, this source here—but in any words you want to use, in any language, in any religion, those parts of each religion, those parts of each philosophy that address in some way the concept of loving allowance. That is the lesson and teaching of Earth. And that, in many ways, is why anything comes to the planet Earth to learn, and the greatest teacher of that upon the planet is the dolphin.

The greatest experience of that is the dolphin. Their concept, their experience, as a community is such—they don't really need to change the human being, they just allow the human being and, uh . . . for they know, they have this intelligence that all will be as it will be, according to your growth, your karmic cycles.
So, for example, if a dolphin is captured, the dolphin won't necessarily be ecstatic about that experience, but will quickly surrender and become family with the captor rather than rebel. So the dolphin—not the clown but the teacher of laughter—uh, people walk away from watching the dolphin and they almost believe in God again, uh . . .they have been taught by a great master, although they might call the dolphin a clown.

So the dolphin is a great teacher, and a great experience of allowance—that's okay, it doesn't affect them . . . and so, uh, another is a species that is not accepted by most humans . . . uh, typically called the Yeti. Accepted or not, this is a real life form. They, as well, are extraordinarily gentle creatures and beings, and they, as well, are extremely intelligent and are, uh, teachers of allowance.

From their perspective, as from the dolphin's perspective, the human being is the—in the literal term—can be a vicious beast—uh, to watch and listen to human beings talking about the beasts of the jungle is a little laughable . . . uh, so there are many different and new perspectives to see, for the human mind to see.

Pride in intelligence is perhaps one of the more subtle but consistent barriers to greater love among the civilized arenas of the earth.

DON: We see this also as intellectual arrogance.

DR. PEEBLES: Yes, correct; exactly. Which, of course, is demonstrated and experienced, cultivated inside one because one does not love self. One is afraid that one is not talented, and so a demonstration of intelligence is a technique of “trying to feel better than.” If you feel better than, you might be respected. If you are respected, then you feel loved. But what everyone finds out in their own karmic life cycles is they'll be respected again and again; they'll achieve their goals and become very successful and life will respect them. And then they die lonely. They say, “Wait a minute, I guess maybe respect isn't love, so maybe it was a waste of time trying to be superior,” and so forth.

Pet Loss, It Is Real Grief

I put my cat, Snickers to sleep a few days ago. It was a very difficult decision, and one I had put off for several weeks, wanting to avoid grief. Although I knew I could not avoid grief, I was only partly avoiding grief because I was suffering already, and at times, the way Snickers looked at me, I knew he was suffering grief also. He knew, too, that our time together was about to end. All the years we’ve been together, nearly 14 years, I have insisted he was psychic, so how could I now deny he knew?

I have been treating him for kidney disease for more than three years, and during that time he might stabilize for awhile but in the last couple of months he had gone further down hill, dropping weight constantly, barely eating in the last week or so, and was also anemic. He was fourteen and I had him since he was 7 months old.

Pet loss is as real as the grief we suffer when any loved one dies. I know all about grief, I’ve lived it—I write about it. I also know that the loss of a pet (or any new loss for that matter) can bring to the surface past grief. And I was not ready to go there, until ... I knew he was ready ... and that forced me to be ready. He went peacefully, not putting up any kind of argument. It was time.

So I am in grief. I really miss him. I’m not greeted at the door, nor do I see him sitting at the window of my study as I back my car out of the drive, nor do I have him asking for milk or snacks when I go into the kitchen. I find myself commenting on a TV program out loud expecting him to react to my comment as he always did. Now when I go to bed he does not curl up with me, or when I sleep late I do not have his paw gently touching my face, his way of telling me to wake up. I miss his physical presence and hope to feel more of his spiritual presence as soon as I can move through a little of the aloneness. Right now, the grief is blocking those subtle spiritual connections. I feel that, I know that, but the letting go is still difficult. Maybe in a few days it will be easier.

It’s been a week and a half and the tears still come. Yesterday I began looking at kitties up for adoption at the local humane society. But right now, I don’t dare go there in person. And it is raining today, a good reason to stay right here at home.

I know it would be best if I give myself a little more time to grieve. But it hurts. I knew it would. But I know he is free and healthy again. And this time he can run through the tall grass, chase the birds and butterflies, climb the trees, and do the little things he could not do while living in my home. That day when we said our goodbyes, I told him it would be like that for him. And those words of mine calmed him as I held him and I believe gave him comfort and peace.

If you go through grief from the loss of your pet, don’t let anyone tell you: “Oh, what’s the matter with you? It’s just a cat.”—“It’s just a dog.” Obviously and sadly, the person who would say that to you does not understand love, let alone, understand unconditional love.

Today, 15 years ago, my husband, Don Pendleton died. I asked him to greet Snickers (whom he did not know in the physical), and I am sure he did, not only for me, but for Snickers. That is what love is all about.

Peace For Our World, Mattie Stepanek

Young poet, philosopher and peacemaker, Mattie J.T. Stepanek (1990-2004) wrote this poem following 9-11-2001. Even today his words have such strength, meaning, and inspiration, for living peacefully and with respect for all others. It is reminder for today's attitudes about acceptance, diversity, equality, and events of bullying (cyber and otherwise), hate crimes, as well as terrorists acts.

Mattie was a wise and beautiful soul, so far beyond his years. He published his inspirational poetry and essays and you will find them in his HEARTSONGS series of books, and in JUST PEACE: A Message of Love, cowritten with former President Jimmy Carter. His mother, Jeni Stepanek's book, MESSENGER: The Legacy of Mattie J.T. Stepanek and Heartsongs, (Forword by Dr. Maya Angelou) is now available in paperback, and also Kindle.

Nancy at Life in the Second Half Blog has an interesting post today (actually all her posts are interesting and inspirational if you do not already know that) Her post is on Greg Braden and his video series The Science of Miracles.

Although I've never read any of Greg Braden's books, I have heard him interviewed often on Coast to Coast AM Radio and have watched videos. He marries science and spirituality in an inspirational and enlightening way.

As Nancy writes: "Greg Braden takes complex material related to science and spirituality and puts into an easy-to-understand format. Reiterating the importance of prayer and positive, peaceful thoughts, this series has much to offer. There are seven parts, between five and ten minutes each. Norweigen and Danish Textbook UFO Article

Today I had a request for permission to use an article of mine in a Denmark school textbook, in print format, and also as an electronic interactive book. The article of my UFO sighting has been included in a Norwegian 8th thru 10th grade textbook, Crossroads 8 written by Halvor Heger, since 2006.

The Crossroads textbook is in English and is used to teach English to the Norwegian students. I found that Halvor put together an interesting book for his students and I was pleased to be included, and in the same section of the book as former President Jimmy Carter's UFO experience. The new Danish textbook editions will be published in early 2011.

An excerpt of my article was used, with just a minor edit. Here is my original article.

UFO Disclosure Project, Dr. Steven Greer

Who are the extraterrestrials? Are we alone? I think not, as does Dr. Steven Greer.

Steven M. Greer, M.D., has been working on his Disclosure project for several years. His talk here in this video is excellent--informative, credible, and humorous. His talk is long but well worth listening to!

My friend Thomas Jacobson brought this to my attention yesterday. Thomas has done spiritual and mediumistic work for many years, and was the trance medium who channeled Dr. James M. Peebles for the interviews Don and I did for our book, To Dance With Angels. (thanks, Thomas)

I have been aware of Dr. Greer for a number of years as he is a frequent guest on Coast to Coast AM Radio show with George Noory. But I was not aware of this video of his talk in Barcelona last year.

Thomas commented, "Among other things, a most fascinating experiment and procedure that his [Dr. Greer] team uses to purportedly achieve communication/response from the ETs."

Dr. Greer not only goes into his discussions and disclosures with President Clinton but also more recently with President Obama. It sure appears our presidents' hands are tied in being able to disclose the truth of the extraterrestrials.

I guess my major concern is WHO is tying their hands.... and it has appeared, the hands of other world leaders. And how can those WHOEVER have so much control? Darn right scary! I don't mean the extraterrestrials are scary—but the persons who have control of keeping this information away from us!

CA Gay Marriages Return

Love and equality wins out, at least for now. About time.

The Judge rules to lift the ban on gay marriage and gay marriages in CA can resume on August 18.

Our Former Governor and now Attorney General (and current candidate for Governor), Jerry Brown, who has considered Prop 8 unconstitutional as many of us have, today quoted the words of Frances Wright, a leading feminist of the 19th Century (1795-1852):

"Equality is the soul of liberty; there is, in fact, no liberty without it."

Why is it so difficult for people to get that? And why, in a country founded on religious freedoms, why does religion even have a say in someone's choice of love and matrimony?

It will be so nice when we can get beyond these biases and accept diversity, and allow equality not only for ourself but for everyone--no matter race, religion or sexual identity.

It seems time for our country to catch up with the rest of the world.

Miracles, Big and Small

Today I was formatting my book, A Walk Through Grief: Crossing the Bridge Between Worlds for ebook publication in addition to print and Kindle, and wanted to share this.

Possibly you have experienced something similar, but if not, I do hope you are open to the possibility of experiencing this sort of thing. This is from my Chapter 9, Miracles, Big and Small:

If we can accept the fact that life does not end at death and that our loved ones are still around us then it should be easy to believe that from time to time we can experience communication with them and from them. That communication may come through to us if we are open to receive it and believe that it could occur. It may come in subtle ways, or it may be profound, we may have healthy skepticism, or we may deny that an unmistakable event has occurred right before our eyes.

Just recently I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with a woman I had met about two years ago, several months following her husband's death. We had not seen or spoken to each other since that last visit. This time, we had the commonality of widowhood to discuss. As we talked and exchanged experiences, she told me she had asked her late husband for a sign that he was still around her. She asked him to give her one red rose. She dared him to do it and she set up a deadline. She had to have the rose by the following Thursday at midnight. That particular Thursday afternoon came and she received an unexpected package in the mail from one of her dear women friends with whom she had not discussed her challenge to her deceased husband. Inside the package was a pretty blouse and lying on top of it were two dried red roses. She laughed and said, "See, he couldn't do it. I didn't want two roses, I asked for one."

It was my turn to laugh. "He sent you two roses. He showed you he could do it and do one better."

"But I only wanted one rose," she insisted. We both had a good laugh.

A recent Time magazine poll reported that 69% of people believe in miracles. But how do we classify a miracle? Does it have to be a profound event such as the Virgin Mary appearing to the children of Medjugorje?–or could it be our deceased grandmother standing at the foot of our bed? Is it an extraordinary healing or mysterious warning voice that calls out and saves us from disaster? Could it be the tears flowing from a religious statue or is it a little two year old boy who says he has been playing with his deceased grandfather? Is it the appearance of a guardian angel at a time of deep depression or could it be the warm hand on our shoulder when no one is around?


Or, could a miracle be two red roses?

If we are not open to receiving a miracle in whatever form it comes to us we may miss it. Albert Einstein said, "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as if everything is."

So, as Einstein told us, the choice in how we perceive our world is ours, and ours alone. Miracles may come to us in many guises, in subtle ways, without a marching band announcing their arrival, through prayer, without demand, with just a glimpse, when most needed, through epiphany, at a moment of meditation, with the helping hand of a stranger, with the cry of a newborn infant, or with the wrinkled hand that reaches for one last touch, with the flower that bursts forth revealing its beauty, and with every beat of our heart and every breath we take. Life is a miracle. Each one of us is a miracle. The world is filled with miracles, tiny ones, big ones, incredible ones, profound ones but never, ever, insignificant. The cosmic dance of life is filled with miracles, it is the way God planned it. He would expect us to embrace them with joy, reach out with anticipation, revel in the extraordinary beauty, and allow ourselves to be touched by His gifts. If we expect a miracle, it may very well be ours.

CA Prop 8 Ruled Unconstitutional

Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker overturns CA Gay Marriage Ban, with some strong language, ruling "Proposition 8 is unconstitutional under both the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses."

The Court's Conclusion:

"Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite sex couples are superior to same-sex couples. Because California has no interest in discriminating against gay men and lesbians, and because Proposition 8 prevents California from fulfilling its constitutional obligation to provide marriages on an equal basis, the court concludes that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional."

This is good news that we are moving ahead in having equality for all. This Federal Court decision is being called an historic decision and although the ruling will likely be appealed it is really beside the point, as gains have been made. It was shocking to many of us Californians, young and old, that Prop 8 even passed, but many say we can thank the Mormon Church for that television ad campaign that aired several times a day with false information.

I just read a poll released by the Public Religion Research Institute and the results show that Prop 8 would not pass today ... so there seems to be hope that gays and lesbians will have their equal treatment in our country in the near future. I have also found it rather interesting that East Coast states and Iowa have been more progressive than the West...CA....in allowing gay marriages. Even many other countries are ahead of us in this regard.

It could be so nice when citizens of our country can dissolve prejudices and biases in all areas of life: race, culture, sexuality, and religion. Our social climate is changing but we do have a ways to go.

The two excellent lead attorneys for the gay couples were Ted Olson and David Boies, who were on opposite sides of a legal battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore over the results of the 2000 presidential election but joined forces in representing the plaintiffs in this lawsuit. Kind of ironic, huh? Yet, when I first heard they were on the case I was optimistic.

In May of 2009, Ted Olson stated, "We are two lawyers from opposite ends of the political spectrum who have come together to support one of the most important issues of our time,...it is not about liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican. We're here in part to symbolize that."

And at that time David Boies said, "Our Constitution guarantees every American the right to be treated equally under the law. There is no right more fundamental than the right to marry the person you love and to raise a family."
