Judge J.W. Edmonds, Famous Mediums, Part 4

“Surely God would not have created a being as man ...
to exist only for a day!
No, no, man was made for immortality.”
~Abraham Lincoln

Famous Mediums, Part 4

Judge John Worth Edmonds (1816-1874), a well-known lawyer, New York State Senator, Judge of the New York Supreme Court Judge and Court of Appeals, was a Spiritualist and a medium. His daughter, Laura, also had the gift of mediumship and spirit contact.

Apparently Judge Edmonds stood firm in his Spiritualist beliefs and research he did into the credibility of several other mediums, even while being attacked often in the press and in political and social circles for his beliefs . The chief communicators were alleged to be Emanuel Swedenborg and Francis Bacon. Judge Edmonds wrote the following: Letters and Tracts on Spiritualism; Spiritualism, Volume I (1853); Spiritualism, Volume II (1855); and Uncertainty of Spiritual Intercourse (1856).

Those of you who have read my blog for awhile and know of my books, will know that Dr. James Martin Peebles is my spirit guide and is the subject of two of my books, To Dance With Angels, written with my husband, Don Pendleton, and my later book, Three Principles of Angelic Wisdom.

This is an excerpt from my ebook: How Thin the Veil! 150 Years of Spiritualism, in which I quote Dr. Peebles in his earthly writings in regards to Abraham Lincoln and then Judge Edmonds.

* * * * * * *
Abraham Lincoln was regarded as a spiritualist by many and was said to have held séances in the White House and "frequently attended séances at the residence of the Lauries in Washington. The daughter was a medium." In his 1903 book, What is Spiritualism?, Dr. James Martin Peebles, M.D., recounts some of that history. "It was in this same family that Miss Nettie Colburn was entranced by spirits purporting to be Jefferson, and the fathers of our country, and who plead of President Lincoln to free those four million slaves in bondage. (See Mrs. Nettie Colburn-Maynard's work, entitled 'Abraham Lincoln, a Spiritualist.') Lincoln's emancipation message was an inspiration from the spirit world. Judge Edmonds, delivering an oration in Hope Chapel, N.Y., upon the life of Lincoln, gave the proofs of this. It is undeniable."

Though Dr. Peebles did not give us details of any of those proofs, he did give some background on Judge J. W. Edmonds. He served as an attorney in the law office of ex-President Martin Van Buren, became a New York State Senator in 1831, was appointed a Circuit Judge in 1845, was elected Judge of the (New York) Supreme Court and later, in 1851, took his seat upon the bench of the Court of Appeals. Peebles explained that Edmonds considered himself an agnostic until his wife's death in 1850 when he began experiencing her presence and on-going contact from the Other Side, until by 1851, he "became quite fully developed himself as a medium for visions, allegorical pictures, and direct communications from the spirit world written through his own hand. His daughter Laura also became a writing medium, and a trance medium with the gift of tongues. The Judge now openly avowed his Spiritualism, lectured upon it in public, wrote articles in the American and foreign press."

Peebles quotes the Judge as saying, "Spiritualism has deepened my faith in God, and the spiritual life and teachings of Christ. It has also inspired me with the most kindly Christian feelings toward all conscientious religionists of whatever name or party."

Continuing further, Dr. Peebles explains, "The pride, as he was of the New York bar for years, a jurist of unimpeachable integrity and keen discernment, as well as an authority on international law, Judge Edmonds was not only a Spiritualist, but a spiritual medium with fine clairvoyant gifts."

Judge Edmunds wrote of his daughter Laura’s mediumship and xenoglossy. On occasion, while in trance and contact with a spirit, she would bring messages forth in other languages, Greek, Spanish, and American Indian: Chippewa and Menomonie tongues.

Messages from my Angels

Photo © Copyright 2010 by Ted Grussing

At times I receive messages from my angels and guides. My spirit guide, Dr. James Martin Peebles, Elizabeth, a beautiful being of Light, and the “group.” I hear their words clairaudently and each has their personality, so I am able to distinguish from whom the message comes.

Here are a few of their inspirational comments:

“Reach out with love and touch someone.
With that gesture the angels sing,
and the heavens resonate with joy!”

“Sit quietly and wait to hear our words.
They will come.
‘Ask and you shall receive;’
those are still words to live by.
We are here.”

“Angels of light, angels of love,
we are here to dance with you.
Hold our hand, twirl and twirl,
listen to the melody,
sway to the rhythm,
souls in unison,
moving joyfully through the cosmos.”

“Reach out and take the hand of your angel,
and you shall know love.”

“You cannot escape love.
It is the essence of all that is.”

“It is our joy to communicate with you.
We are honored to be able to touch you with love.
Each of you is an angel.
You, too, spread your love
as you share yourself with others.
We exchange healing energy, we give to you,
and, you give to us.
We all come from Love
and return to Love.
But in our sharing,
we find the true meaning of Love.”

"What Befalls the Earth..."

Mono Lake, CA

"What befalls the earth befalls all the sons of the earth.
This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth.
All things are connected like the blood that unites us all.
Man does not weave this web of life. He is merely a strand of it.
Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself."

"Healing, One Lesson at a Time"

Self Healing Expressions: Self-Healing ~ Spiritual Healing: Online Courses and Healing Articles
and a Monthly Newsletter

I don’t know if I have written much about my ecourse publisher, Self Healing Expressions, or if any of you have checked out their inspirational website when I have mentioned it--but you should.

There are some great ecourses, and they cover Emotional Healing, Spiritual Healing, Physical Healing. The lessons are sent to you daily or weekly: Reiki Courses, Life Purpose, Shamanism, Feng Shui, Dreams, Holistic Prayers, Soul Mates, Laughter Therapy, Journaling, Nutrition, Angels and Spirit Guides, and more. I have two ecourses there, and three ebooks at their sister site. Healing Ebooks, “to guide and support you on your healing journey,” and free bonus gifts are offered with each purchase of an ebook.

But in addition to those many ecourses, and the growing number of ebooks, all of us on the faculty have written articles that you can enjoy reading for free.

Marty Tousley, an accredited bereavement counselor, has some excellent articles and ecourses on grief, and also on grief in coping with pet loss. Just the other day I referred my neighbor to her works as they had to put to sleep their rescue dog, a blind cocker spaniel, who they rescued when she was eight. She’s been a neighborhood fixture for a few years now, and we’ll all miss her evening walks and wagging tail.

June Cook and her husband, Ken Cook, founded Self Healing Expressions and their mission is: “To educate and empower individuals towards greater health, well-being and harmony with the earth and each other; to provide expert technical and marketing support to those with messages of spiritual healing, holistic health, hope and peace.”

You may want to sign up for the free monthly ezine that June puts out. It’s always interesting and inspirational.

And hey, I’ve very much enjoyed working with them now for several years. I really have to thank Marty Tousley for encouraging me to contact June with ideas for my ecourses. That was in 2003. I can’t leave Mike Monastero out of the team...as he’s the webmaster, and he’s good at it!

I’m sure you will find articles that you will be interested in reading. There’s a bunch to choose from.

Here are reviews of a few of the courses (including one of mine)

First Year of Grief by Marty Tousley
"Thank you very much! Your course supported me through the worst time of my life! I really looked forward to my e-mails. I have saved all of them so I can read over all the wonderful advice and loving comfort it gave me. I would definitely take another class with you and probably will in the near future. I will also recommend your course to others!" ~ Jackie Wimberly, Florida

Healing with Feng Shui and Color by Deborah Redfern
“I want to express my gratitude to Deborah Redfern for the magnificent Healing with Feng Shui and Colour course shared with a friend (yes, Self Healing Expressions offers a two-for-one-course!). I started reading the course with an enthusiasm which grew daily as I was reminded of Feng Shui already learnt but Deborah has a unique way of introducing new aspects of healing. I loved the daily quotes and the different websites offered to explore if interested. You feel the generosity of information flowing through Deborah as her knowledge seems inexhaustible!" ~ Carole Schneider, Master Teacher of Interior Alignment

Dreams for Healing: Using Dreams as a Pathway to the Soul by Laura V. Grace
“This is an amazing class that is helping me connect to myself through dreams. Dreams hold so much helpful information. Little by little Laura is helping me understand how to tap this far-reaching resource. It is an incredibly enriching course!" ~ Gena Lumbroso, France

Journey to the Heart: Exploring the World of Spirit and Our Connection to It by Linda Pendleton
"Awesome, awesome, awesome. I have saved each lesson and will return to them for refreshing incentive frequently. As a cancer survivor, this course came into my life just at the right time. I can't thank Ms. Pendleton enough." ~ C.H., Florida

I do hope you will read the articles there and sign up for the monthly ezine. Every month when it comes I want to share it with others. And you may want to do the same.

Enjoy, Linda

The Blinking Artist: Thomas Nelson

"With little time to mourn my losses, I turned my face to the wind and never looked back. "
~Thomas Nelson, Musician, Artist

One of my Internet friends and close friend of my cousin Vivian, Terry, sent me an email tonight about the art work of his younger brother, Thomas Nelson. You really need to take a look at this and read the story of this artist.

See, what is so inspiring is that Thomas is a quadriplegic and he now draws pictures by blinking his eyes.

Talk about courage...and living life...

From his website:

Eight years ago, at 57 years old, Thomas was living the life of his dreams. But then he received devastating news that would radically alter the course of his life. He writes in his online journal:

"In 2001 I was a year into retirement and having the time of my life as a full-time working musician. Little did I suspect that fate was winding up to deliver a curve ball that caught me right squarely between the eyes.

"This particular missile came in the form of a diagnosis of ALS. I guess I'm fortunate that my version of paralysis began in my feet and worked its way up because it gave me a few extra years before my arms and hands became too weak to play."

ALS, also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease", progressively shut down the functions of Thomas' muscles. He was forced to adapt. "With little time to mourn my losses, I turned my face to the wind and never looked back. The constant through it all has been my computer. Through the computer I stay connected with friends and family, manage my personal affairs, read books, and communicate with the people around me."

As a creative outlet, Thomas devised a way to draw. He uses E Z Keys scanning software, Xara Xtreme graphics editing software, and an IST switch that emulates a mouse click when he moves his cheek. Amazingly, he connects vector points and draws lines by blinking his eyes.

Coming Out of the Spiritual Closet

Photo of my Great Aunt Isa, abt. 1915-20

The pollsters' findings on people who have had contact with those on the Other Side, angels, guides, or loved ones, reflect my own independent research of the matter and my experiences with ordinary people of all walks of life. It appears many people are now very open about discussing such matters in public with little sense of embarrassment and many even seem delighted with the opportunity to do so.

So we have made gains and it may be because so much of various mystical events are now reflected in our entertainment: the books, movies, television, and that it now seems much more comfortable for discussion. People have come out of their “spiritual closet” and are ready to let the world know who they are and what they have experienced. They then discover that they are just like many others. They also discover they are far from crazy. What they have or will experience is actually a normal part of life, and is within the norm of human existence.

The more common experience related to me by others has more to do with direct contact from friends or loved ones who have passed on rather than a full blown encounter with an angelic figure. Many other experiences at first seem to involve an ordinary helping hand from a stranger at a time when it is needed most. It is only later that the recipient of the good deed begins to realize that something supernatural must have occurred.

While intuition presents itself in different ways for individual people, it is often thought to be: clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, and other types of extra-sensory perception. Yes, it is possible for Spirit to communicate in more then just one way with us! And even within a particular communication, it may be a blend of the various intuitive classifications.

Have you had commuication from a deceased loved one?--or angels?

You can leave your comments here or visit my Angel Board and share your experience.

Trusting Intuition

Medical doctor and intuitive, Dr. Judith Orloff and psychic intuitive Char Margolis discuss intuition with Dr. Oz.

Dr. Orloff is author of Second Sight and her latest book is Emotional Freedom. Char is an excellent psychic and her books are Questions from Earth, Answers From Heaven and Living in Spirit. She also has a long running primetime television show in The Netherlands. (I wish it was here in the USA, too).

We have to learn to trust our intuition. Char said to “OWN” your intuition and to do so with these 4 Cs:

Courage, Confidence, Commitment, to Conquer it—act upon it.

I would like to see more discussion of this by Char and Dr. Orloff.

Eileen J. Garrett, Famous Mediums, Part 3

The Irish Medium, Eileen J. Garrett (1893-1970)

Another widely respected medium, Eileen J. Garrett, a native of Ireland, was invited to the United States by the American Society for Psychical Research in 1931 to participate in paranormal research and later went to Duke University's Rhine Institute for testing in their Parapsychology Laboratory under unusually strict conditions. She scored very high on the ESP tests and while being studied for her mediumistic abilities, "she gave communications in the trance state that contained information peculiar beyond chance coincidence to a series of individuals. These, one at a time, were seated in an adjoining closed-off room, so that she never saw any of them or knew their identity." [1]

Garrett was to later establish her own Parapsychology Foundation in New York which published the International Journal of Parapsychology.

American Psychic Medium, Arthur Ford, in writing of Eileen Garrett in his 1958 autobiography, Nothing So Strange, described her as, "...one of the great mediums of all time and one of the most important people in the field of psychic research.”

Belief in an Afterlife

“Death is simply a disguised deliverance, or, like the budding rose,
it climbs up on the garden wall to bloom on the other side.”
–James Martin Peebles (1822-1922)

“The wise man looks not to how long he lives,
but to how he dies. For him death has no terrors,
because it is the day of his birth to immortal life.
And he will be mindful of those he has left behind,
and will commune with them.”
–Seneca (4? B.C.–65 A.D.)
A recent poll indicates that 82% of Americans believe in an afterlife. The numbers are also increasing for those who believe that they have had communication from a loved one on the other side.

It would seem that the religious instinct is innate within humankind, as though a template for the religious experience had been programmed into our genetic structures that govern human expression. Within the innate religious or spiritual instinct are experiences that might be classified as miraculous. But, are many of the events or experiences actually miracles or no more than ordinary occurrences?

Reports of extraordinary and astonishing events attributed to supreme being or divine power will be found in virtually every world religion, every culture, and probably within every human mind from primitive times right up into the modern age. Many cultures do not regard miracles or paranormal events as anything extraordinary but merely the natural workings of a natural world. Most cultures who share that idea have well-formulated spiritual beliefs that have been carried forward from generation to generation, throughout history, and many of these cultures have evolved highly sophisticated belief systems.

When one reads the history of cultures, it is very apparent that there has always been a “knowing” within mankind that evolves into understandings that we are, indeed, spiritual beings and that life does not end with the death of the physical body. Mankind has always looked to the heavens in a search for answers. I have often wondered why that is and the answer I have come up with is that no matter our religious upbringing or belief system, we do, within us, have the knowledge that we are much more than a physical body having a life experience. We are temporarily using a physical body for an ongoing spiritual life.

When I look back at my life, I recall at a very young age knowing that there was more to life than just a few years we may have here on Earth. I have also been lucky to have experienced events that have convinced me beyond any doubt that life and love go on after the death of the body. I am hardly alone in that spiritual understanding. That idea and understanding has been presented in writings since the beginning of recorded history. We are also experiencing the coming together of science and spirituality and many in the medical profession are leading the way. Scientific studies are being conducted in various areas of life and death and maybe one day in the not to distant future there will be scientific evidence that consciousness lives on beyond the death of the physical body.

It is my hope that we are now into an age of new spiritual understanding where we can welcome and accept the gift of knowing that we are often given, no matter how subtle that gift may be. We are immortal, eternal spirits.

Those gifts not only make life more joyous, grief easier, but help to remove the fear of death that has been placed culturally as an obstacle to spiritual growth and understanding. We do know who we are. We just have to bring that knowing, our remembrance, to the forefront. And increasing numbers of people are achieving that while in the body. And for those who do not rediscover the knowing, they will know without doubt one day as they pass into another state of being.

Byzantine Mosaics, Ravenna Basilica, Italy

"Love is the beauty of the soul."
Saint Augustine

My cousin Sylvia and her hubby Tom last week went on a camping trip to northern Italy from their home in Vienna, Austria. They spent time at Lake Garda, and also visited Ravenna, which is known for its superb Byzantine mosaics dating from the mid-6th century and said to probably be the finest Byzantine mosaics in the western world.

As Syl always does, she promised me angel photos from her trip. Here are two of her photos with her description:

“This is from the Basilica in Ravenna. Dates back to 525A.D. It is a mosaic in a 2 octagon with 8 rectangles sort of chapels off the center. All is glitter with a play of light and dark void and solid forms. It is down some stairs almost in the basement so it is dark walking down then when you get there you see light in shapes and colors with filtered light through the windows and in and out of the octagon shapes. Very lovely experience. Ravenna was once the capital of the Roman Empire and in the 6th century it was dominated by Byzantine culture.”

It’s nice she often has the chance to explore Italy as our grandparents were born in Sicily and came to America in the later part of the 19th century...so Syl is able to explore some of our family heritage and culture.

Thanks, Syl...

Ancient Aliens; and The Unknown novel by Linda Pendleton

Tonight I am watching the History Channel and the program, Ancient Aliens. Fascinating. Apparently the series is based around the theories presented by Erich von Daniken in his 1968 bestselling book Chariots of the Gods, The series further explores the theories of ancient alien visitations and alien technology. It’s available on DVD too.

So it reminded me of my own novel, The Unknown .  I recently added the novel to Kindle. It is also available in trade paper at amazon.com and other online bookstores.

Here is an excerpt from the opening to The Unknown, which takes place on the Hopi reservation in northern Arizona: (sorry for the formatting--can't indent properly).

Tommy stared into the darkness as if transfixed, as if seeing something that Leon could not see.
Tommy said, "It's going to happen."
It happened before Leon could phrase a reply.
There was a bright flash on the horizon that seemed to originate from the point at which Tommy had been staring.
And now Leon was staring in that direction too.
It all happened with incredible swiftness. The bright flash became a group of colored lights, pulsing and flashing–low in the sky and approaching at an astonishing rate of speed.
There was no time to do anything. In the instant that followed, Leon's mind was a jumbled riot of confused thought. Should he hit the ground? Those pulsing lights were zooming in straight at them, almost upon the pickup truck before Leon could even form a lucid thought out loud, it happened so fast.
Tommy remained placidly leaning back against the grillwork of his pickup truck, holding his can of beer and watching the approaching something as if he fully expected this to happen.
Leon, who had certainly not expected anything like whatever this was, did have time to duck his head as something huge and incredible whooshed by overhead. The gigantic whatever was cruising at what would be treetop level. Leon craned his neck around, watching it pass by close enough for his widened eyes to see that the pulsating lights encircled a silver-colored sphere which Leon Running Deer estimated to be nearly a thousand feet in diameter. There was an eerie silence. Leon barely discerned the slightest sound as the thing barreled at them.
Then it hovered for five or ten seconds.
And then, even before the amazement of any of this could sink into Leon's stunned mind, the whatever became gone disappearing in a straight path tracking southwest, fading out of sight into the darkness with no less than another five or ten seconds.
Leon Running Deer murmured "Holy shit," in a tone of mixed awe and reverence.
Tommy said soberly, "The gods speak. The old Ways live."
Leon's rational mind was grappling with what he'd witnessed. "We always saw military aircraft flying over when we were kids," he said. "The bombing ranges in Utah and New Mexico–"
"You think that was a military aircraft, bro?"
Leon admitted, "I don't know what it was."
"I'll tell you what it was," said Tommy. "It was two drunk Indians full of too much brew." His eyes focused on Leon. "You want to keep your nose clean, lawyer man? This never happened."
Leon found himself wondering what indeed had happened.
The whole event had transpired, start to finish, in hardly more than thirty seconds, tops.
The night again belonged only to the night breeze carrying the scent of mesquite and the howls of coyotes beneath a black infinity of starlight.
It was as if nothing had happened!
And what exactly had happened, Leon pondered. Something, something very beyond the realm of normal human experience, had happened here tonight. Had the gods indeed appeared and spoken to him here on this remote mesa on this night? He was left with nothing but fleeting impressions of what he had seen and heard.
He could believe his eyes and ears, couldn't he?
He found himself wondering how often people saw things like he and Tommy had just witnessed, with no one believing them. Or were such people afraid to say anything because they knew that no one would believe them?
Leon stopped staring after the point at which the "whatever" had vanished. He reached for another can of beer.
"Yeah, you're right," he said soberly, thoughtfully, staring again off to the distant point where the lights had disappeared. "Just a couple of drunk Indians."
He did not know what to make of what had occurred. But something had definitely occurred, yes. Hell, yes.
And Leon Running Deer found himself wondering when it would happen again.

Lenore E. Piper, Famous Mediums, Part Two

Photo Copyright 2010 by Ted Grussing

Famous Mediums, Part Two: Lenore E. Piper.

A medium who drew considerable attention in the late 19th century was Lenore E. Piper (1857-1950) of Boston. She exhibited what has now become identified as the classic mold of a trance medium who relinquishes conscious control to welcome the influence of an indwelling entity who displays strongly identifiable personality characteristics. Piper hosted several different entities who would come through her at different times. She was also capable of automatic writing.

Piper was investigated at some length by the famed Philosopher William James, Harvard Professor of Psychology, who later became president of the American branch of the Society for Psychical Research which was founded in England. After much initial skepticism, Professor James' examination of Mrs. Piper in 1885 finally concluded that she was undeniably genuine. James' wife, Alice, accompanied him on his first visit with Mrs. Piper and precautions were taken to insure that the medium was not aware of the history or even identities of either. James later explained, "My impression after the first visit was that Mrs. P. was either possessed of supernormal powers, or knew the members of my wife's family by sight and had by some lucky coincidence become acquainted with such a multitude of their domestic circumstances as to produce the startling impression which she did. My later knowledge of her sittings and personal acquaintance with her has led me absolutely to reject the latter explanation, and to believe that she had supernormal powers."

UFO Picks Up Car With Two Teenagers Inside in N.H.

Have an 18-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy become the new Betty and Barney Hill?

“Two New Hampshire teenagers sitting in a parked car were approached by a black-colored UFO in Laconia on March 20, 2010, lifted into the air and then dropped back onto pavement 180 feet away, according to testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) database.”

This event happened about 90 miles form the Betty and Barney Hill abduction of 1961.

Read the reports by the two kids at Peter Davenport’s National UFO Reporting Center.

After the police were called by the girl’s mother and the two teenagers were interviewed; the event was reported to Davenport’s website and he apparently contacted MUFON and they investigated.

UFOs Should be University Course Says American Professor

What characterizes the abduction experience is that it is physically real and it enters the physical world, but it is also transpersonal and subjective. It crosses that barrier between the hard-edged physical world and the spirit/transpersonal world.” ~John E. Mack, M.D., 1992 article, The UFO Abduction Phenomenon: What Does it Mean for the Transformation of Human Consciousness?

I came across this article about an American professor of anthropology at the Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, New York, who believes that UFO studies should be part of the curriculum of university studies. The anthropology professor, Phillip Haseley has brought several speakers on the subject to the college in recent years.

What I found interesting was the articles I found on reporting this were from the UK, not the United States, although I finally did find an article from the Buffalo, NY paper which is in the neighborhood of the college where Professor Haseley teaches.

“It happens to millions of people [around the world],” Professor Haseley is quoted to have said. “It’s about time we looked into this as a worthy area of study. It’s important that the whole subject be brought out in the open and investigated.” He also added in regards to MUFON or those who believe in UFOs, “To say we are UFO believers basically implies we are taking this on faith, and that’s not the case, there’s plenty of evidence.”

Although Professor Philip Haseley has not had an encounter of his own, he is head of the Western New York Mutual UFO Network, MUFON, the national group interested in UFOs and who investigates local sightings and encounters. The local MUFON sent out an investigator to me when I had a sighting in Sedona, Arizona, April 4, 2001. And it was a thorough report....

I agree it would make a fascinating college course and, of course, I am also reminded of the work of the late psychiatrist John E. Mack, Harvard Professor, Pulitzer Prize author (Prince of Our Disorder: The Life of T. E. Lawrence), and author of Abduction and Passport to the Cosmos— about his important work with abductees and extraterrestrial encounters.

You may want to read more about Dr. Mack and see a video on my previous blog in which he talks of evidence.

Velikovsky and his "Threat" to Science

My husband, Don Pendleton, was always interested in science as well as metaphysics, and in his nonfiction writings often would marry the two, and at times, even bringing the religious into that marriage. At times, his fiction would also gave him the opportunity to do the same.

I just finished formatting Don’s sixth Ashton Ford novel Time to Time for Kindle, and in rereading it, I thought these ideas that he presented through his fictional character, psychic detective, Ashton Ford, were so very interesting. Don was a fan of the works of best-selling and controversial author, Immanuel Velikovsky, Worlds in Collision, Earth in Upheaval, and Oedipus and Akhnaton; books I still have in my library. Dr. Velikovsky was a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst but was best known for his scientific views on the solar system and our own existence. His theories were not accepted at the time by many in the science community but since that time more than sixty years ago, some of those theories now have been given credibility and consideration.

Don, in his fictional book, gives a nonfiction account of what happened to Velikovsky when he published his major work, Worlds in Collision. And Don’s character, Ashton Ford asks the important and revealing question: “What was the scientific/academic community so frightened of?” Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

Are you at all familiar with Velikovsky’s books?--Or the controversy concerning his theories?

Excerpt, Don Pendleton’s Time to Time, from Chapter Thirteen:

More than thirty-five years ago, at the very dawn of the modem UFO age, a scholarly Russian Jew from Israel landed on our shores with a manuscript that would forever challenge man's view of himself, of his own history, and of his solar system. The man's name is Immanuel Velikovsky, and his Worlds in Collision was destined to ignite a fire storm of controversy that now stands as the most shameful attempt to suppress nonpolitical ideas since the Inquisition.

Velikovsky's great sin was that he chose to accept as literal truth the vast treasury of written history which modem scholars universally regard as religious myth. Another great sin was his vast intellect and fearless determination to state his views into the teeth of academic dogma and arrogance; his intrusion into the jealously guarded temples of science.

Even so, the hysterical reaction by some of the most eminent educators and scientists must have gone far beyond anything this quiet scholar could have anticipated. The language used to denounce him—even before his ideas had been published—was ferocious to an extreme unmatched in modern times, harkening back to the dark days when scientists themselves were being anathematized by the church, and to the same spirit that burned Giordano Bruno at the stake and inspired Galileo to recant in order to escape a like fate.

Velikovsky did not write about or even mention flying saucers; indeed, he had undoubtedly never heard of such phenomena when he arrived in New York shortly after the end of World War II. But his story is relevant here as a stage setting for the later fire storm over UFOs, and I believe you will find it interesting as an insight into the functioning of some academic/scientific minds.

He was a medical doctor and psychiatrist with a fascination with biblical lore and an inherent sensitivity to the broad historical overview of man and his environment. Whether his reconstruction of history was right or wrong was never the issue. It was the implications of that reconstruction that caused the panic in so many institutional minds and made his very name a sore point to academicians (to this very day) who have never read a line of his book.

Velikovsky was not an astronomer or physicist, but the mere publication of his ideas was obviously highly threatening to the entire academy of astronomers and physicists here and abroad.

He was not an historian, or a sociologist, or a naturalist, or an anthropologist, archaeologist or geologist, yet many of these almost with a single voice arose to denounce and castigate the man without even coming close to a direct contact with his writings.

What caused such hysteria in our academic and scientific communities?

Velikovsky took the biblical events and other "myths" as a true account of real experiences of real men and women sharing together the real history of this planet. He then looked for logical explanations within the natural world to verify this real history. His brilliant investigation took him into the heavens as well as into the earth, and his conclusions were spectacular.

For example, though not an astronomer and with no credentials whatever to make such a statement, Velikovsky theorized that Venus did not begin its planetary existence as the other planets did, that in fact Venus did not occupy its present orbit around the sun until very recently, that in fact it was torn from the body of Jupiter by a violent upheaval within that planet and was loosed into the solar system as a comet that made several close passes at Mars as well as Earth, and settled into its present orbit during the recorded history of mankind. That "recorded history" is contained within the legends and myths for all to see.

The whole astronomical world "knew" and had long accepted the thesis that Venus has a surface temperature below sixty degrees Centigrade and that frigid Jupiter is buried beneath miles of ice. With all that learned conviction, it is easy to see how the institutions would laugh up their sleeves at the novel conclusions by Velikovsky that both planets must be quite hot, but it is not easy to understand the anger and hostility with which these conclusions were met.

Velikovsky's ideas were, of course, anathema to the body of professionals who enjoy the prestige and respect normally accorded our men of great learning. If Velikovsky was right then these guys were dummies and undeserving of their robes and honors—or so they seemed to feel.

The most prestigious American astronomer of the time, Harlow Shapley of Harvard (who apparently led the attack on Velikovsky) stated in a letter dated May 27, 1946: "If in historical times there have been these changes in the structure of the solar system, in spite of the fact that our celestial mechanics has been for scores of years able to specify without question the positions and motions of the members of the planetary system for many millennia fore and aft, then the laws of Newton are false. The laws of mechanics which have worked to keep airplanes afloat, to operate the tides, to handle the myriads of problems of everyday life, are fallacious. But they have been tested completely and thoroughly. In other words, if Dr. Velikovsky is right, the rest of us are crazy."

Shapley said it; I didn't. But Velikovsky was right. The pity is that none of these pillars of science would even consider the evidence. All of their protests were based on mere hearsay of Velikovsky's theories, long before the book was actually published.

And, for the shameful aspect, the storm of protest was geared to a single goal: the suppression of the ideas. Shapley led a broad institutional attack upon the proposed publisher of the Velikovsky manuscript, Macmillan Company, which was highly vulnerable to academic displeasure because of its large investment in textbook publishing. In a letter dated January 25, 1950, to the publisher at Macmillan, he tried to get the message across in a sly way: "It will be interesting a year from now to hear from you as to whether or not the reputation of the Macmillan Company is damaged by the publication of Worlds in Collision. Naturally you can see that I am interested in your experiment. And frankly, unless you can assure me that you have done things like this frequently in the past without damage, the publication must cut me off from the Macmillan Company."

Another member of Shapley's club, Dean McLaughlin, Professor of Astronomy at the University of Michigan, wrote Macmillan on May 20, 1950: "The claim of universal efficacy or universal knowledge is the unmistakable mark of the quack. No man can today be an expert even in the whole of geology or the whole of astronomy. There is specialization within specialties. I do not mean that we are ignorant of all fields but our own; I do mean that we are not equipped to do highly technical original research in more than several distinct specialties for each scientist. But no man today can hope to correct the mistakes in any more than a small subfield of science. And yet Velikovsky claims to be able to dispute the basic principles of several sciences! These are indeed delusions of grandeur!"

The entire point of McLaughlin's letter was in protest to Macmillan's promulgation of such lies—yes, lies, as are contained in wholesale lots in Worlds in Collision."

Strange, isn't it, that the professor states in the same letter: "No, I have not read the book."

This is just a tiny sample of the unprecedented conspiracy to suppress a publication and which succeeded to the extent that Macmillan passed their hot potato off to Doubleday, which has no textbook division. But the club even went after Doubleday.

In a letter to a Doubleday subsidiary dated June 30, 1950, Fred Whipple—Shapley's successor at the Harvard Observatory—worded a sharply sarcastic broadside at the new publisher in discussing a public account of the matter: "Newsweek has unwittingly done the Doubleday Company a considerable amount of harm. They have made public the high success of the spontaneous boycott of the Macmillan Company by scientifically minded people."

Whipple then went on (in the same letter) to suggest a similar treatment of Doubleday: "There will be no revision of Earth, Moon, and Planets (a book by Whipple) forthcoming so long as Doubleday owns Blakiston (the subsidiary), controls its policies, and publishes Worlds in Collision."

Yet in a statement printed by the Harvard Crimson on September 25, 1950, Harlow Shapley said: "The claim that Dr. Velikovsky's book is being suppressed is nothing but a publicity promotion stunt. Several attempts have been made to link such a move to stop the book's publication to some organization or to the Harvard Observatory. This idea is absolutely false."

What were these great men so frightened of?

Velikovsky's thesis was to the effect that global cataclysms had fundamentally and repeatedly altered the face of the planet Earth during historical times, that the terrestrial axis had shifted, magnetic poles reversed, even a different orbit established.

In horrific convulsions, the oceans had replaced continents, Earth's crust had folded, massive volcanoes spawned new mountain chains, lava flows of up to a mile thick covered vast areas of the planet, climatological changes converted lush gardens to frozen tundra, and forests became deserts.

Civilizations collapsed in a wink and whole species disappeared as gigantic tidal waves swept along the continents, crushing and burying everything in their paths.

Stunned human survivors recorded the events as best they could, and those records survive today for any who will look and see.

Velikovsky looked, and he saw and reported it again. He also theorized a logical explanation, based entirely on the evidence, of how it all came about. Jupiter gave birth to Venus, which became a comet and roamed the solar system for eons before inevitable celestial mechanics brought the huge mass into a collision orbit with Earth.

It is not even important to my point here that Dr. Velikovsky's radical theories have been largely vindicated (though not on purpose) by new discoveries during our space age. Venus is a hot body with a very thin crust, as Velikovsky concluded, and it does rotate in a retrograde motion, again as he concluded. Jupiter is a very hot body—now even possibly thought to be a dim companion star to our sun—and it is a radio source, as Velikovsky theorized.

Many other of Velikovsky's theories, regarding electro-magnetism and sunspots and various other phenomena of our solar system, have been vindicated.

None of that is the point.

The point is that the entire scientific/academic community rose up to crush these ideas even before they could be promulgated, and with the aim of suppressing them rather than meeting them head-on in true scientific curiosity.

This is one example of a human phenomenon, the curious workings of the mind having to do with intellectual arrogance and survivalist instincts.

We will meet another example later, in the discussion of a similar conspiracy to suppress through ridicule all reasonable debates and/or researches of the UFO question.

Then we'll try to figure out why these people are so frightened.

Or do we already know why?

If interested to learn more, Youtube has a series of six videos with Velikovsky (The Bonds of the Past), and discussions of his theories. I believe the videos was from the 1970s. Also, Carl Sagan (who was outspoken against Velikovsky) did a Cosmos show about him.

Abraham Lincoln a Spiritualist, Now on Amazon Kindle

Was Abraham Lincoln a Spiritualist? This question has been asked time and again about our 16th President. This book profiles the mysterious and mystical side of Abraham Lincoln: his spiritual side. Lincoln’s interest in Spiritualism apparently separated him from many, but not all, as you will see in reading this Kindle book.

Medium Nettie Colburn was born in 1841 and in 1891 she published this book. It charts her experiences with President Lincoln during a difficult period of great upheaval in the United States. This book is a profound treasure, a spiritual profile of an intelligent man, a deep thinker, and a man dedicated to preserving the Union and inspiring greater humane treatment of all citizens.

Linda Pendleton has added an Introduction and Notes to this fascinating and credible story of how one young woman who had the gift to communicate with the Other Side, also had the good fortune to communicate with, and for, President Lincoln at a time when he greatly needed inspiration. It was during the 19th century when Spiritualism made an impact, not only in the United States, but around the world, and students of Civil War history should enjoy this look into life in the White House during Lincoln's time there.

Betty Books, Famous Medium, Part One

Famous Mediums

I plan to continue a short series of blogs on various well-known credible mediums from the past. First is:

“Betty”

Some of the most widely read channeled books of the twentieth century were written by Stewart Edward White, a very successful novelist of adventure and Western tales, relating material channeled from the other side by his wife, Elizabeth Calvert Grant White, who was initially identified only as "Betty". Their experiences with the spiritual world began casually in 1919 when some friends visited their home with a Ouija board, considering it a mere toy and hoping only to entertain them with it. One thing led to another, though, and the board began taking on a mind of its own, repeatedly spelling "Betty" even though Betty had become bored with the game and had gone to sit beside the fireplace. At the repeated insistence of the board, she finally rejoined the others. At this point, the board became highly active and repeatedly spelled out, "Get a pencil–Get a pencil." But it was not until some days later that Betty did privately pick up a pencil at home and this launched her first experience with automatic writing which was to last for several months before experimenting with hypnotic trance. This produced the best results and Betty was soon a fully functioning trance medium.

The Betty Book was published in 1937, the third of a series that began in 1925, followed in 1938 by Across the Unknown. Betty died in 1939 and that launched a whole new chapter in this amazing story; Betty began communicating with her husband from the Other Side, through a family friend, psychic Joan Darby (a pseudonym for Ruth Finley, who later, after her death came through Arthur Ford). The Unobstructed Universe is Stewart Edward White's report of the messages from Betty as channeled through Joan.

Within days after my husband, Don Pendleton, passed away, I found a sense of peace in reading the last Chapter of Stewart Edward White’s book, Across the Unknown, about his loss of his wife. I had recalled reading it previously so I pulled it from my bookshelf, and found comfort and a sense of knowing in his Chapter titled, I Bear Witness. I very much identified with his words, his emotion, and his experience of being strongly aware of her presence after her death. White had written of those same feelings I was then experiencing.
I also identified with White for another reason. Stewart Edward White was a best-selling author of Westerns and Adventures, prior to his nonfiction series of Betty Books, ...and in the same way, Don had been a successful novelist for years, Action/Adventure and Mystery, before writing nonfiction about channeling...i.e. our book To Dance With Angels; and the paranormal, our book, Whispers From the Soul: the Divine Dance of Consciousness. It appears Stewart and “Betty” had a strong love bond as Don and I had, and shared interests in metaphysics, spirituality and the paranormal. Synchronistic? I think so.

I do know that at a time of grief, White’s writing was helpful for me. Maybe some of you will find that same inspiration if you are at a difficult time dealing with the loss of a loved one. I also wrote about this in my book, A Walk Through Grief: Crossing the Bridge Between Worlds.
His book, (and the last Chapter mentioned) are now public domain and can be read at the Gutenberg Australia site.

Here is an excerpt from his chapter:

I BEAR WITNESS

1.

FOUR months ago the manuscript of this book was put in final form and sent to the publishers. And so was completed another full turn in the spiral of Betty's work. But not, apparently, the work itself. According to the Invisibles something of this yet remained to be accomplished –something they refused to define, except that it was different from what had gone before.

"Like a blossom," said they.

"A blossom?" Betty asked.

"Something that occurs at the end of effort, as a demonstration to others. It is a natural attribute of your accomplishment. Of course you could go on living as you are, but then you couldn't have the demonstration at the top of your endeavor."

At that time the true meaning of this escaped me altogether. My interpretation was that Betty was about to begin another spiral of instruction, with the difference they mentioned appearing largely in the treatment. Accordingly, when she was overtaken only two weeks later by a serious and rackingly painful illness, I was convinced that the success of the job demanded her recovery. It seemed to me defeat at this point would mean that everything we had built up through all these years, and that so many people had taken from us and believed, would crumble into disrepute. And so I fought with every means at my command to hold her back from the Great Adventure.

Another strong incentive to battle, of course, was our natural dread of separation. I shall not dwell on this, but it is necessary to touch upon it sufficiently. We had been married for thirty-five years. In that time we had been apart for but three periods of any length: twice during my explorations into unknown parts of Central Africa; and once during my service in the World War. We had met together the adventures of life, and they had been varied: years of pack horse travel in the Rockies and Sierra; the cattle ranges of Arizona before the movies came; fourteen months in Africa; sixteen seasons in Alaska--here, there, and everywhere in the wild and tame corners of the earth. And adventures also among people, and ideas, and for twenty years the pioneering in these strange dim regions of the higher consciousness.

In the course of this last exploration we had finally arrived at the settled conviction that permanent separation is impossible. Nevertheless it is only human to dread the temporary parting: to contemplate such an interim as something dismal to be endured. I feel sure that this was a stronger consideration with me than with her. There is always a difference between any conviction, however profound, which is arrived at by study and inference; and the understanding belief which comes of experiencing directly the thing itself. For years Betty had been running back and forth to the other consciousness as easily and naturally as a cat in and out of a house--remember her various essays at experimental dying--whereas I had stayed on the inside only looking out. That she should face her final transition to this consciousness with serenity, then, was only to be expected. And it was equally inevitable that, in spite of any amount of philosophizing, there remained in the depths of my being, essentially unmodified, the primitive fear of death and separation.

Accordingly, I now realize definitely, Betty's strongest incentive in her fight was myself. This was not clear to me then, or my own attitude might have been different. She could not foresee how I would take her going, and she was reluctant to bum her bridges. For over two months it was just this that held her, in spite of the greatest pain and in face of what must have been almost overwhelming temptation.

"I could go so easily!" she told me, "at any minute. I have to fight against it in the night." She asked me a little wistfully, "If it came about that way, you wouldn't mind too much letting me go, would you?"

And I, in my ignorance, replied emphatically:

"I most certainly would!"

Two months passed and she became weaker and weaker, until finally the physical frame was worn to the point where only her fighting spirit held her. By now she could only whisper a word at a time, gathering strength for each effort. In the evening the doctor came to the house. I took him to see her, but was not myself looking toward her, when I heard him exclaim: "My God! The woman still smiles!"

Then for the first time I allowed myself to entertain a doubt as to the wisdom of our persistence. What job could there be that was worth such suffering? A little later Betty closed her eyes. We were not sure whether she was conscious or in coma. I went into another room, sat in an easy chair, and "projected" in her direction as strongly as I could these words:

"You are now where you can decide whether or not the job requires you to stay here and endure this. As far, as I am concerned, I release you gladly. I will take you by the hand, go with you just as far as I can, and place it in the hand of the one who is waiting."

A minute or so later the doctor came to tell me it was over: that suddenly Betty had spoken up, as clearly and gaily as had always been her habit.

"It's all right," said she. "I've had a talk with my boy. You can take me
now."

2.

Now comes the part I almost despair of setting down adequately. But it is the big thing, and I must try. My first momentary reaction was of relief that she need no longer go through such agonies. The next was a faint but growing surprise that the apprehension of death as a dark veil, an impenetrable barrier, a sharp division was whisked away. It became as thin as a mist. Instead of being a big portentous thing, it was really a comparatively unimportant and trivial detail, after all. Then, as the minutes passed, I became literally astounded that all the things I had been dreading, and bracing myself for, simply weren't there. For it was becoming increasingly, most gloriously, evident to me that the only serious threat of death did not exist.

This next is very difficult to convey. Let me see if I can give an inkling.

You know the cozy, intimate feeling of companionship you get sometimes when you are in the same room; perhaps each reading a book; not speaking; not even looking at one another. It is tenuous, an evanescent thing—one that we too often fail to savor and appreciate. Sometimes, in fact, it takes an evening or two of empty solitude to make us realize how substantial and important it really is.

Then, on the other hand, you know how you draw closer by means of things you do together. And still more through talk and such mental interchanges. And most of all, perhaps, in the various physical relationships of love and marriage.

Now when you stop to think of it, all these latter material contacts, right through the whole of life, are at root and in essence aimed at really just one thing: that rare inner feeling of companionship suggested feebly in the sitting-by-the-fire idea. That is what we really are groping for in all friendly and loving human relations, hampered by the fact that we are different people more or less muffled from each other by the barriers of encasement in the body.

Well, within a very few minutes that companionship flooded through my whole being from Betty, but in an intensity and purity of which I had previously had no conception. It was the same thing, but a hundred, a thousand times stronger. And I realized that it more than compensated for the little fact that she had stepped across, because it was the thing that all our physical activities together had striven for, but—compared with this--had gained only dimly and in part. Why not? Actually it was doing perfectly what all these other things had only groped for. So what use the other things? and why should I miss them?

Does this sound fantastic? Maybe; but it is as real and solid as the chair I am sitting on. So much so that I have never in my life been so filled with pure happiness. No despair; no devastation; just a deeper happiness than I have experienced with her ever before, save in the brief moments when everything harmonized in fulfillment.

And furthermore it has lasted, and is with me always.

3.

This, I now believe, is the "great blossom" of which the Invisibles spoke; the final significance to which all of Betty's twenty years of work was to lead. Here is her concrete proof of one reward that can come to those who follow in her footsteps, her final evidence that her instrument of twenty years' forging is strong enough to withstand the
supreme test:

Of course I do not delude myself that those who pursue Betty's teachings to this culmination are going to be able, all of them, to gain this point of view in face of loss. Not all of them, nor completely. But it is a demonstration that it can be done; and it is forerunner of what will, one day, be the universal experience of those who follow the trail she has blazed across the unknown.

Phoenix Lights, Triangular UFO, March 13, 1997

March 13, 1997.

I was living in Northern Arizona, in Sedona, when the TV news reports came out on the “Phoenix Lights” over Phoenix, Arizona that evening about 10:00 P.M. Thousands of people reported witnessing a mile long V-shaped, or triangular, craft with circular orange lights gliding/floating silently over Phoenix. Reports were that this craft was spotted in the Las Vegas area about 7:30 and then sighted over the Kingman and Prescott, Arizona areas prior to the arrival in Phoenix. A bit later it was seen in the Casa Grande and Tucson area south of Phoenix. Hundreds took photographs and videos of the strange craft, moving at a slow glide and low altitude.

It has been reported that within minutes large numbers of telephone reports began pouring into law enforcement agencies, to news media offices, to Luke Air Force Base (located west of Phoenix), to the National UFO Reporting Center, MUFON groups, and the calls came from a wide range from Northern Arizona south to Phoenix. It has been said that the craft was witnessed by at least two air traffic controllers in the airport tower at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, and by several pilots on final approach to Sky Harbor.

Many people wanted answers and answers were not forthcoming. Over the next few weeks, City Councilwoman Francis Barwood demanded an investigation but she apparently was repeatedly rebuked in her attempts to open an investigation. She also contacted Arizona Senator John McCain who apparently wrote two letters to the Air Force, which apparently were “filed” away. The then Arizona Governor, Fyfe Symington called a press conference which I saw on television stating he would look into it. A few hours later, he held another televised press conference to state that he looked into it and knew who did it. Out onto the stage walked one of his aids dressed in an alien suit. His stunt did not go over well with most Arizona citizens and many resented the fact that he mocked anyone asking for an investigation into the event.

In May 1997, the Public Affairs Office at Luke Air Force Base announced that the lights were flares launched from the Barry Goldwater Firing Range at approximately 10:00 P.M. Such typical “good thinking” on their part–but what accounts for the sightings all over Northern Arizona, Nevada, some one to two hours earlier? Anyone who saw the object moving is not accepting of the flare explanation. I’m surprised they didn’t say it was an experimental boomerang that they threw into the air from Nevada to see if it could make the three hundred mile trip to Phoenix, and probably with crash dummies attached holding flashlights!

In March 2007, ten years later, former Governor Symington admitted he had seen the UFO that night.

I’m sorry that I was not outside that evening where I was living in Northern Arizona as I might have had the opportunity to see the UFO cruise over. The UFO that Don and I experienced in West Covina, California was not as large as the “Phoenix Lights” mile-long craft. (Read my original article on our sighting). From eye witness reports and photos and video tapes I have seen of the “Phoenix Lights,” what Don and I saw was smaller and much more of a triangular shape than a V-shaped object. What I do know is that it was similar, obviously moved about the same from the accounts I’ve read, and in no way was either object a Stealth aircraft, nor any other known aircraft.

In March 2004, a well-respected Phoenix physician, Lynne D. Kitei, M.D. published “The Phoenix Lights,” her eye witness account and her own photographs of the March 13, 1997 event along with her earlier experiences of similar sightings over Phoenix. I recently listened to her fascinating account on the Coast to Coast AM Radio Show a few days ago, March 2010.

Apparently sightings of flying triangles have increased in more recent years worldwide. Belguim had a “flap” of large and silent triangular UFOs from 1989 to 1990 and in more recent years have had a new “flap” of sightings. Sightings have been reported in England, France, Germany and other countries. Reported sizes range from thirty feet to a mile in size. Most often they are flying at low altitudes and at extremely slow speed, but have been known to suddenly accelerate to high speed and disappear in a flash. According to reports by the National Institute for Discovery Science, it appears that here in the United States many sightings have been around military basis and corridors between military bases. One might say that happened with the “Phoenix Lights”–from Nellis Air Force Base adjacent to Las Vegas, to Luke Air Force Base adjacent to Phoenix.

For those that seem to believe that these craft are our own government’s experimental crafts, should one not question the fact that many of these sightings are at low altitude over heavily populated areas? Does it make since that the government would risk lives with their experiments when they have lots of unpopulated government land to fly over? And also our commercial and noncommercial air flights are heavily concentrated in metropolitan areas such as Phoenix and an experimental slow and low flying craft poses extreme danger.

As I wrote more than four years ago, hopefully the day is getting closer when our government will reveal to its citizens the answers we have been waiting to have revealed for decades. We are not alone and most people believe that, so why the continuing charade and ridicule? Isn’t it time for acknowledgment?

Another World

"This analysis of our knowledge of the universe has given us reasons to believe that, behind the world of phenomena we perceive with our sense organs, there is another world to which we can not apply our ordinary concepts of space and time."

Animal Smarts or the Gift of Intuition?

"Beauty in things exists in the mind which contemplates them." ~ David Hume (1711-1776)

Is Your Pet Smarter Than You?

Some of you may answer the question, "Of course not." Well, how about giving a little more thought to the question?

Does your behavior change shortly before an earthquake or a tsunami? Studies have shown that often the behavior of animals change (e.g., they become agitated) hours or minutes before an earthquake. Remember the stories of the animals, especially the elephants, who moved quickly to high ground shortly before the horrendous Asian tsunami hit? Some even called out a warning.

Have you known and given a warning when someone close to you is about to have an epileptic seizure?

Have you recognized by scent a cancerous tumor on someone?

Have you ever protected and saved someone in the ocean from a shark attack?

Have you ever saved a life by hitting someone in the chest and knocking them down and jumping on their chest as they were chocking on a piece of apple?

Have you ever found yourself in unknown territory a thousand miles from your home and set out to walk your way home, and succeeded?

Have you sat at your front door in anticipation of the arrival in 10 to 30 minutes of a family member, although there was no reason to expect the arrival?

You may not have had these experiences but many animals have. We could call these types of events animal smarts, but the more appropriate term would be innate intuition. Intuition is natural, not supernatural, is normal, not paranormal, and is an emotional connection or even a close bond to nature, to animals, and to humans.

Scientific Animal Research
British biologist and author, Rupert Sheldrake has done scientific animal studies and has concluded there seemingly is an emotional bond and connection between pet owners and their pets. The highlight of his study is the anticipatory behavior that indicates dogs know when their owners are about to return home, often by 10 to 30 minutes. This telepathy occurs because of the close bond, an emotional connection, even an emotional need, that binds the sender and receiver. And I would conclude that the role of sender or receiver fluctuates back and forth between owner and animal: a telepathic receiver one time, a telepathic sender the next.

As reported in the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research (July 1998), a telephone survey of 200 household in Northern California conducted by Sheldrake found 132 of the households surveyed had pets. 45% of dog owners claimed their animal knew in advance when a member of the household was on the way home, compared with 37% of cat owners, and around 20% of these pets were said to react more than 10 minutes in advance. The survey indicated 46% of dog owners and 41% of cat owners stated their pets respond to their thoughts or silent commands. Also interesting were findings that more pet owners claimed to have had psychic experiences themselves than non-pet owners. A significantly higher proportion of the psychic pet owners claimed their pets exhibited psychic powers than the non-psychic owners did. The California findings were in close agreement with a previous survey done by Sheldrake in England. Sheldrake writes about his pet studies in his book, Dogs That Know When Their Owners are Coming Home, And Other Unexplained Powers of Animals.

The Gift of Intuition
Our own innate intuition is a valuable asset and can be a guiding force in our daily lives. By enhancing our intuition it appears it may enhance the emotional connection and deep bond we have with our pets. Enhanced intuition increases our ability for telepathic communication. It is a meeting of the minds a sharing of wisdom and often by being tuned into your pet, not only will you emotionally feel the unconditional love your pet has for you but you will be more tuned into his needs and desires. It's even possible a telepathic message from your pet could keep you safe from danger.
