James H. Hyslop's Quotation on Existence of Spirits

James H. Hyslop (1854-1920), Columbia University Professor of Logic and Ethics, author, and paranormal researcher, played a major role in psychic research during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In his 1918 book, Life After Death, Hyslop states, "I regard the existence of discarnate spirits as scientifically proved and I no longer refer to the skeptic as having any right to speak on the subject. Any man who does not accept the existence of discarnate spirits and the proof of it is either ignorant or a moral coward. I give him short shrift, and do not propose any longer to argue with him on the supposition that he knows anything about the subject.''

Spirit Communication, Past Lives

In 1860, Dr. James Martin Peebles (1822-1922) wrote, “Invocations to spirits, angels, God, when bubbling up spontaneously from the inner depths, are vitalizing and strengthening to the divine forces of the soul.”

James Martin Peebles, about 45 years of age.

I believe my recent Poll results are rather interesting, and about what I thought they would be.
84 % believe in Past Lives. 9% believed it to be unlikely.
27% have seen a UFO, while 17% believe they may have, but 55% have not.
65% believe there is a UFO government cover-up and only 10% said no.

And these answers to this question really brought a smile to me. Have you ever had a message from:
An Angel? 50%
A Deceased Loved One? 64%
A Spirit Guide? 50%
An Extraterrestrial? 7%

Now I suppose many who visit my Blog do so because they have an interest in spirituality and spiritual ideas, but I am happy to see that people are listening to the whispers of love coming from their angels, guides, and maybe most importantly for healing of grief, from a loved one.

Those messages from loved ones may bring a lot of comfort, even years after a loss. I always feel it gives validation to the fact that consciousness lives on after the shedding of the physical body. And also is a reminder that love does not die but lives on.

For those of us who do believe in past lives, we probably realize that we may have been of the opposite sex in another life time, even time and again. That idea often makes me think about those who are homophobic or so against the opposite sex in some way. Is it about fear? Maybe memories that are in the recesses of their mind that might bring forward fear of a past life situation, or fear that they may be of that sexual persuasion again.

Today, Dr. Peebles is a spirit guide to many. Almost twenty years ago, he had spoken to us during a channeling about the coming increase in contact with the spirit world. He said more and more people would be having experiences which would validate the existence of spirit. He said that communication with the Other Side would become a normal, acceptable way of every day life and that what he refers to as the “illusion of separation” would become thinner—in other words, the veil between worlds would become more transparent. And in that transparency one would recognize his or her connection not only to God or the Source, but to each other as spiritual beings.

I believe that is happening. I have spoken with many people who have had mystical experiences. One cannot help but notice the upsurge in the hunger for spiritual connection and even spiritual material. And that is often being filled by the publication of many successful books, movies, and television shows on spiritual subjects, everything from angels, miracles, near-death experiences, mediumship and the body/mind/soul connection.

Dr. James Martin Peebles, in his terrestrial life, was a clergyman, doctor, author, and a leading Spiritualist who traveled all around the United States and the world on lecture tours, and was himself a medium. He was surrounded all of his life by what he referred to as his “band of angels,” a group of spirit entities on the Other Side that he was often in communication with.

As I wrote in my book, Three Principles of Angelic Wisdom, “The mighty hand of James Martin Peebles penned his fast-held beliefs and his indignation with the idea that spirit communication should cease because some church mind said it should be so. He wrote, "Spiritual beings are daily and nightly descending to communicate with, and minister to, their mortal brothers," an axiom he still holds [today as a spirit guide].

“He also had insight into the ever-present search for spiritual understanding when he wrote, ‘Humanity is pleading, yearning for knowledge. Inquirers are still asking, 'If a man dies shall he live again? And if he live why may we not know it?' And the search for knowledge goes on.”

And in my own search, last night I attended a healing/prayer circle at a nearby Spiritualist Church. The medium who was leading the small circle connected with my Dad. I knew almost as soon as she began giving his physical description it was Daddy. Two things she said about him, actually three, told me for sure it was him. I wasn’t really expecting him but then again I should have known he would be there as I had called on him and my late husband, Don three weeks ago when my mother was in the hospital with a mild heart attack. My sister told me she was in extreme pain and the morphine was not touching it after four hours or more, and her breathing had become very labored. I asked Daddy and Don to go to her and help her with her pain. Forty-five minutes later I received a call from my sister, who was with her, and she told me Mama was resting comfortably and peacefully.

Daddy’s been gone thirty years. My mother is 90 years old. I told Mama today about Daddy’s visit, and also told her about her night at the hospital, and she had no memory of being in that much pain, and she was happy to know Daddy was around. I was happy, too, but not surprised. He’s always been close by. And so is Don.

What the heck, we are all spirits, if we only remember that! Here or there on the Other Side, it matters not.

“The greatest illusion is that you are alone; never are you alone.” ~The Spirit, Dr. Peebles.

My Angel Message Board

“Angels are spirits, but it is not because they are spirits that they are Angels. They become Angels when they are sent. For the name Angel refers to their office, not their nature. You ask the name of this nature, it is spirit; you ask its office, it is that of an Angel, which is a messenger.” ~St. Augustine

You are invited to share your real life angel stories with others on my Angel Message Board at Self Healing Expressions.

Often, a person believes he or she is the only one who has had a spiritual experience, and may think they are a little crazy. Please be assured that we all have innate intuition and often experience what some may call the paranormal. Actually, these types of experiences are shared by many, and although they often may be considered extraordinary, they are within the norm of the human experience.

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” ~PierreTeilhard de Chardin (1881-1955)

Perhaps one of these questions will help get you started...

Did you have a guardian angel as a child? Some children have acknowledged the presence of their angel. Have you shared in the experience of a young child who has had contact from an angel, a spirit guide, or deceased family member? Because young children are still so open and not hampered by adults or society, they eagerly share their experiences.

Has a spiritual being appeared to you? Share with us your experience. Was it an apparition? Did it come to you as a warning, a rescue, to give guidance, or share wisdom, or only to give love?

Have you (or someone you know) ever encountered an angel in disguise? Did you soon realize it was, indeed, an angel?

Have you had the experience of an aroma of a particular scent related to a deceased loved one or a spiritual being? Did you experience roses, other flowers, perfume or after shave, hot coffee, or some other scent closely associated with a loved one?

Have you ever heard angelic singing or sound –where there was no physical source for that sound?

Have special messages come to you via birds or butterflies, or electronic devices?

I love reading the angel experiences of others, so please feel free to share your stories with us, anonymously if preferred. And enjoy the angelic stories posted by others.

“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” ~ Hebrews 13:2

Ghosts and the Alamo

Last night I was listening to Coast to Coast AM Radio Show and George Noory’s guest was Robert Wlodarski, author of a book about the ghosts of the Alamo, and other books on the paranormal. I had not heard much about ghosts there, but I did have an experience of psychically tuning into the past historical and traumatic events that had taken place there and resulted in the deaths of many.

In 1986, my husband Don and I were in San Antonio, Texas while on a book tour and had a weekend of free time. The first place we headed was to the Alamo. As a kid, I always loved reading about Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and the Alamo. So I was pleased to finally be able to visit the place. But my pleasure almost immediately faded away shortly after entering. I felt overwhelmed with a chaotic, frantic feeling, almost as if I were in the middle of a battle, maybe the big battle. It was a very disturbing feeling and I had to leave there immediately. I could not stay in the building. I was disappointed that I could not see more, but I could not stay. We walked out and we sat on a bench in front of the Alamo, and I discovered Don also had picked up on the negative energy in there and he was somewhat uncomfortable also. So here we were, two people very much interested in the historical history but unable to enjoy it as we were too tuned in psychically to the past events of the place.

In February 1836, a thirteen day battle between General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s Mexican Army and American defenders of the Alamo left many dead, some have estimated more than 1,700, with the Mexican Army troops being the largest number, nearly 1,500, and about 250 defenders including Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, and Colonel William Travis.

The Alamo, Mission San Antonio de Valero, is a former Roman Catholic mission and fortress compound, in which construction began in 1724, and in the early 1800’s a Spanish military stationed a cavalry unit at the former mission, and it became known as the Alamo, the Spanish word for cottonwood.

Ghosts have been seen at the Alamo for years, dating back to 1836, shortly after the last battle there. Stories indicated that General Santa Anna wanted the Alamo burned to the ground and in an attempt to do so, one of his Colonels and troops encountered six ghostly monks who materialized from the walls of the chapel and while advancing toward them holding and waving flaming swords commanded “Do not touch the walls of the Alamo.” The troops retreated and General Andrade returned and was again given the dire warning by these six monks who hurled fire balls causing the General to retreat as fast as he was able.

Although the story of the monks was believed by many it was also contradicted. But by 1894, the city of San Antonio used the Alamo mission as police headquarters and a jail. Prisoners complained of ghostly activity, including mysterious sounds, and the presence of a ghostly sentry who walked the roof keeping guard was enough to have the human night guards refusing to patrol the area at night. So it did not last too long as a jail. The paranormal events there became subject of newspaper articles just prior to the turn of the 19th century.

Even today, paranormal events are commonly observed—shadowy figures, noises, voices, screams, eerie cold spots, a little girl often seen looking out a high window of the gift shop, a ghostly sentry looking out the front entrance, a young boy who carried on a conversation with a young six year old girl visitor and the boy invisible to the girl’s father.

Nearly 200 years, and spirit still visits and/or hangs out there, maybe to watch the 2.5 million physical beings who visit the Alamo every year. Could be that spirit wants to figure out why all those people keep showing up. Have you been there?—and if so, did you have any encounter with spirit or the psychic past?

Spirit Communication, Life After Death and the Other Side

John Edward is a gifted psychic medium. I believe he has done so much for increasing the acceptance and understanding of spirit communication with those on the Other Side.

His books, One Last Time, Crossing Over, After Life, are excellent. For me, I first want to know how the psychic gift came about or was enhanced, and I am drawn to books which reveal that, such as John’s. The latest one I read was Lisa Williams’ book, Life Among the Dead. She’s an excellent medium, also.

One thing I have liked so much about John Edward is his humor. He is able to laugh at himself, laugh at the interpretation of the symbol he receives, and lighten up what can often be heavy with grief, sadness, and pain. He has said, “Information comes through to me in 3 basic ways seen, hearing, and feeling the energy of the person that's crossed over. In which it is a symbolic type of language.”

I believe his humor allows people to be more comfortable, instead of being uptight or nervous while knowing he talks with dead people.

Ho often mentions “psychic amnesia,” the inability to recall during a reading a person, a name, an event, that is very much a part of you. I had that happen, at least to a small degree, when I had an on-the-air telephone reading with psychic Cher Margolis (another good one) a few years ago when she appeared on the CNBC Show The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch. I was so nervous that my mind went blank for a moment over a name but I quickly recovered.

You would think I would not be nervous because I do, myself, communicate with spirit clairaudiently, mainly with Dr. James Martin Peebles, and my late husband, Don Pendleton, and a couple spirit guide/angels here and there. But when in the situation of a reading, with a medium bringing me the messages, I am still in awe when it happens.

No matter how the messages come to us from the Other Side, through mediumship, dreams, intuition, apparitions, however, it is comforting, reassuring, and confirms that consciousness and love live on. And I have come to believe that consciousness does go on after the shedding of the physical body. Without a doubt.

And obviously, I am far from alone in that belief.

Here is one example how others believe. John Edward has a survey on the website for his TV show, Cross Country, on the WE Network. (His show is on Saturday Nights).

98.6 % Believe in life after death. (over 40,150 respondents).

96.1% Believe in communication with those who have died. (over 13,000 respondents).

97.3 % Believe we reconnect with loved ones when we pass. (13,500).

69.6 % Have experienced communication with the Other Side. (12,800).

58.6 % Received communication through dreams while 21% received communication with apparitions. (9,900).

97.9 % Believe the soul lives on. (11,900).

92.9 % Plan on communicating with someone when you pass, but 76.5 % have not made a pact regarding the message or sign they will send. (11,655).

85.4 % Think a belief in afterlife makes the process of dying easier. (over 13,300 respondents).

Those are encouraging numbers.
